Probably not: Azithromycin hasn't been researched in BV, except a single study showing that metronidazole plus AZM was no more effective than MTZ alone. The usual back-up drug when MTZ doesn't work is clindamycin. Boric acid vaginal capsules may help sometimes. Resistant BV is difficult; don't try to figure this out yourself. See your doc, or ask for referral to a gyn who subspecializes in infectious diseases.

hi there, my doctor has me on the 5 day dosage of azithromycin for bv. it's day 3 and my symptoms are just as bad. is it not working?

Probably not: The preferred antibiotics for BV are metronidazole, tinidazole, clindamycin.  I would not expect azithromycin to be effective.

Possible: Use of commonly prescribed antibiotics such as Azithromycin can cause other infections to occur, such as yeast infections and in rare cases bacterial vaginitis. Broad-spectrum antibiotics--ones that kill off many diffrent bacteria--can often destroy normal/healthy bacteria and allow the "bad ones" to grow and cause diseases...

Yes: The gardnerella bacteria that cause BV have a limited spectrum of antibiotics that are effective. Usually Metronidazole and Clindamycin are the 2 'first line' treatments, but research studies have shown that Azithromycin can be effective in treating bv.

can i take metronidazole 500mg(prescribed for bv, two a day) and azithromycin(prescribed for chlamydia) at the same time? the metronidazole is supposed to be taken once in the morning and once at night and the azithromycin im supposed to take a ll 4 capsu

It : It is ok to take both, but you might want to give your stomach at least a 20 minute rest in between the Azithromycin dose and the Metronidazole dose.  Both can cause stomach upset, so taking them together may make you feel pretty miserable.  Taking them with food or milk can help.  Good luck!  and remember not to have unprotected sex for 7 days after treatment and make sure your partner has been treated, too to prevent reinfection.  Good luck!

Should not matter: Finish the treatment that you have been given, then allow 1-2 weeks for your symptoms to hopefully subside. However, if after this period, if you are still significantly bothered by discharge described above, then contact your health care provider

i was prescribed azithromycin and metronitazole for bv and chlamydia sept.2.as of thursday 8th i have started bleeding/spotting. it has not stopped.

Check pg test.: Since you haven't been using condoms, and if you are not on birth control, then you could be pregnant and you need to get seen today. You could do a pregnancy test but  if it is negative, it is worth getting seen and confirming it with a blood test. If you're unable to get pregnant, then you may be having some spotting, &amp; if that lasts for more than a week, get checked. If you have pain, fever-ER!

chlamydia &gonorrhea; got shotfor bv & 1 dose 4 pills of azithromycin.sex 6 days after treatment & got bartholin cyst- am i still contagious/infected?

Stop sex, see MD: The shot (probably ceftriaxone) was for gonorrhea, not BV. Bartholin gland infection can be caused by  gonorrhea, chlamydia, BV bacteria, and others. You shouldn't be having sex with these problems until all symptoms cleared up. Return to your doctor for re-evaluation and probably additional antibiotics(s). Partner also needs treatment if not yet done.  Good luck!
