ive type 2 diabetes and seem to have gotten folliculitis in pubic area numerous times now. could what a dermatologist called that actually be genital warts mimicking folliculitis? im getting my diabetes under control finally it seems?

: No dermatologist would mistake folliculitis for warts, and genital warts are uncommon in the pubic area. This might clear up with improved diabetes control, but not necessarily:  if you have particular strains of staph or strep, you might need special antibiotic treatment to eradicate carriage. If it persists after improved diabetes control, ask your doc for infectious diseases consult.

i have folliculitis with scarring. is there any over-the-counter  product that i can use to diminish them greatly?

Scarring: Over the counter medications to help lesson scars are Mederma and kelocote.

i just got back a biopsy result it says i have faucr suppurative folliculitis  this is the best i can read the report. what is this and is it bad news?

Biopsy report: You need to discuss this with the person who did the biopsy and ordered the report.  They are in the best position to interpret it.  We don't even know where the biopsy was from.

if i had a herpes out break and had a blood test done during that time would it be positive? the result was negative. can folliculitis be painful with white bumps?

: For newly acquired HSV, this is possible. Once infected for 3 months, the blood test is positive for life. It does not go back and forth from negative to positive during outbreaks. If you think you acquired HSV over 3 months ago, a negative blood test suggests you do not have herpes and it is not the cause of your "outbreak". However some people with HSV1 never have positive blood tests.

had double lung transplant 6mo ago, on pred and tacrolimus. doc thinks tac causing folliculitis. i'm 34, feel 15, skin awful. which products best?

Prednisone: HIgh dose of cortisone can induce acne which usually responds to anti-acne treatment  However the presence of prednisone may render treatment less effective.

what can i take or use for folliculitis over the counter? dont have insurance and can't afford to see a specialist.

Depends: It really depends on the cause of the folliculitis as there are many causes, both infectious and non-infectious (ie irritation from friction, shaving, etc).  Or it may not be folliculitis which is why you may need to see a derm.  But, it might be worth a try to get some otc benzoyl peroxide wash, which you can find in the acne section and try to wash the areas x 2-3 min daily.  May dry out skin.

if folliculitis has reduced slightly in terms of swelling, what can i do to make sure it doesn't swell up again?

Meds: Warm compresses and no shaving the area, pulling on hair, oils or products on the area. Antibiotics may be needed if worsening pain, swelling or fever in the area or redness spreading.  Hope you continue to improve.

Sebaceceous cyst?: If it comes and goes at exactly the same spot, probably it isn't folliculitis. I would guess you have a sebaceous cyst that periodically becomes inflamed or infected. Or maybe it is folliculitis, and you have a permanently ingrown hair. Either way, your doctor may be able to remove it or drain it in a way that prevents recurrence.

Start over: Where is the folliculitis? What symptoms? How severe? What was the oral prescription? What was the cream? Details of how you shave? If you wish to have a chance to modify this, you must explore all this after an exam by a Dr with experience treating folliculitis, usually a dermatologist.

Other folliculitis: Causes of folliculitis may be both infectious and non-infectious.  Most athletes will develop frictional irritation on their folds and thighs and aggressive shaving causing shaving bumps are both types of non-infectious folliculitis.  The cause must be avoided in these cases.  Pts on antibiotics for long periods of time, may develop pityrosporum folliculitis, also fungal, viral. Biopsy and culture.
