Anything is possible: Hypnotics can suppress the nervous system, however you need to share these symptoms with your prescribing doctor. With sleep problems, loss of appetite, depression, hypothyroidism, etc. Deep bs for what? If not contraindicated an antidepressant may return your natural sleep.

does cymbalta or valtrex cause weight gain? i also take xanax (alprazolam)  and ambien any chance of weight gain?

Haven't seen wt: Gain with either drug. Seen wt loss(but not good type with ambien) xanax (alprazolam) will help with anxiety, which makes some pt's overeat!

Unlikely: Memory loss is not an uncommonly seen "side effect" of the sedative hypnotics.  I'd discuss with your prescribing physician, as you may benefit from a lower dose, or perhaps a completely different medication.  Good luck.

Ambien (zolpidem) : Ambien (zolpidem) functions by depressing the CNS and has been an effective treatment for those who are experiencing insomnia, albeit it is meant to be a short term solution as Ambien (zolpidem) has been found to be addictive. Research shows that long term use of Ambien (zolpidem) is linked to memory loss, and many people have described their experience with acute memory loss such as sleep-driving, inability to recall conversations/sex/cooking after taking a dose.

See a neurologist because while Ambien (zolpidem) may have an effect on memory loss, there can be other neurological causes contributing to your husband's condition. Short term memory loss and long term memory loss are also early signs of dementia. See a neurologist.

Ambien (zolpidem): Ambien (zolpidem) does affect sleep stages (i.e. Patterns) and dreaming.  It is less so than some other medications prescribed for sleep but it does cause changes to sleep structure.

No depression, but..: I am not aware of any studies indicating a correlation between chronic zolpidem use and major depression. Some patients have become physically dependent on the medication; some develop tolerance (i.e. They need to increase their dose over time); some pts have memory impairment, usually while the med. Is in their system; and some have had episodes of sleepwalking or doing other purposeful behavior.

The : The recent study you are most likely alluding to does not establish an actual cause and effect relationship.  It is not known if the sleep medications cause increased risk or if people who are at increased risk  are just the people who tend to use these medications.  However, Ambien (zolpidem) increases interluken 8, which stimulates cancer growth. Regardless, congratulations for successfully coming off a sleep medication after being on it for so long. Sleep study yet?: I would first want to know if he has had a sleep study.  Given his size, he is at risk for sleep apnea and this should be evaluated.  If you notice snoring or irregular breathing at night then the likelihood is even higher that he has it.  It can lead to poor sleep quality, fatigue, etc.  Ambien (zolpidem) may make it worse.  If he has no sleep apnea, then there are other agents for sleep that could be tried.
