Yes: You can recede only .This is called pattern baldness and patterns can vary - hamilton types 1-8 .Mild cases may have only temporal recession which does not progress.

Wrong diagnosis: I believe that telogen effluvium is extremely unlikely from spironolactone. You are more likely suffering androgenetic alopecia. If you do not wish to take a chance on spironolactone, consider a 5-alpha reductase antagonist such as finasteride. Dutasteride is even more efffective. You can still use minaxidil topical. Finasteride costs about $10-$20 for 90 days. Dutasteride about $10 for 30 days. D

Choose well: The best way is to choose the right parents. Unfortunately, the majority of your hair pattern and balding is determined by genetics. High hairlines and baldness tend to run in families. Medications can provide some relief for some people, but they a less than perfect and have side effects. Surgical hair transplantation has come along way in the last 20 years, but good results require time &amp; money.

Receding hair line: There are over the counter treatments for a receding hairline, like Minoxidil that are helpful.  Since the hair loss is in a 17 year old, i would recommend a visit to a dermatologist to make sure there are no other reasons for the hair loss.

A few options: To stop a receding hairline nonsurgically the most common option is propecia, (finasteride) hair and skin vitamins will also help.  Also make sure any dandruff is under control
surgery is also a great option but ca be expensive.  This however is permanent.

Depends on cause...: One's primary care doctor can check for medical causes. If none are found, then one can see a dermatologist, especially one specializing in hair restoration (some treatments: minoxidil, finasteride, hair transplants, ...). Medical causes may include: hormonal problems (low thyroid), seborrhea, alopecia areata, stressful illness. Other causes: genetic male/female pattern baldness, telogen effluvium

Baldness: baldness can cause stress and vice versa,typically stress induced hearing loss tends to be patchy.  Any drug can theoretically promote hair loss.  Talk to your prescribing physicians, possibly consult with a dermatologist for an inspection.  Male pattern hair loss can be seen at your age
