Pcd: As long as you have the windows closed and the air conditioning running i would use the vaporizer.

Keep it clean: The only problem with a humidifier is excess humidity which can then lead to growth of molds and fungus. Molds will spontaneously grow if the humidity surpasses 65%.
Be on the lookout for any mold growth and if present clean carefully with a nontoxic (citrus based) cleanser.

Probably: It moisturizes the air that you breath.  The moist air is soothing to your airways and it can help thin out mucus, to help you cough less.

Too much : The healthy zone for humidity runs from 35-45 %. If you are >50% you can facilitate human dust mite growth & above 70% you see mold & mildew start to form.

I don't advise it: This product is marketed with the idea that stinky medicine smell is therapeutic. It replicates the aroma  therapy indian tribes uses in sweat lodges with pine pitch. I don't recommend it for kids under 2 as the smell often aggravates congestion.

Use if you wish: I NEVER recommend it for small children.Their airways are often irritated and react to the stuff with increasing cough and congestion.Adults seem to do well with it.

Both work!: Adding moisture to the air using a vaporizer or cool mist humidifier can be very helpful for respiratory infections and problems. Both work, both add moisture to the air. Warm vaporizers are usually cheaper and easier to maintain, but can pose a hazard to children if they get too close or pull on them. If you use a cool mist, make sure to clean it properly and change filters as directed.

Depends on situation: The goal of a humidifier is to raise the humidity in a given space. If the humidity outside your home is low, opening the window increases the work the humidifier must do to be effective (as you humidify outside). If the humidity outside is higher, why use the humidifier if you can open the window.There is no specific safety issue requiring an open window during their use.
