Band aid/minor wound: Wounds respond to cleaning, drainage management. Band aids can cover and protect a small wound and they also comfort children who can be scared with a bleeding skin abrasion. However, band aids also trap moisture and provide an environment for bacterial growth if not changed frequently. In adults band aids are not as useful.

Self adhesive bandag: There are options such as self adhesive bandages. Best is to have a patch test with an allergist and find if you are allergic to latex or the adhesive and make more informed decisions on what to avoid.

Bandaids: They protect the wound from the environment and by doing so minimize the pain producing stimuli that may occur from abrading the area, exposing it to moisture, toxic materials, temperature changes, and so on.

Shingles and Skin: I cannot think of any reason to say yes or no. I guess if you have any secondary infection with pus or fluid drainage then yes a bandage may work well.

Paper tape: "paper tape" can be found in a drug store, and it tends to be less allergenic than band-aids. Use cotton gauze to cover the wound, and paper tape to keep it in place.  It won't stick as well as band-aids, so will need to be replaced more frequently.

Bandaids: Varies with the progression of healing.  Generally these are just there to protect the lesion from environmental irritating factors, and can be left on for several days if necessary.

Unlikely: A bathing suit thin enough to show the nipples would probably outline the bandaid.  You can find a circular type of bandaid or some thin foam inserts.  Be creative if this bothers you.

Hypoallergenic ones: They do make hypoallergenic band-aids.  Some are called hypoallergenic others are labled for sensitive skin.  If all else fails you can use plain gauze pads with paper tape or just wrap a gauze pad with a gauze wrap and tie a knot to hold it in place.

i keep buying super heavy duty water proof band aids because i'm so scared of germs, but are regular band aids good enough to protect cuts?

Scared of germs: My guess is that regular is better as more air may get to cut. Being scared of germs is a worry as you cannot avoid them and many are good germs.  The most extreme case I have seen was a PHD who put all of his mail under a sterilizing UV lamp for at least a day before opening. Mans never used a door handl. Only fruit he would ear was a banana he would peel himself.
