i have a wasp sting from yesterday. and i'm not sure if it is spreading redness or not. it itches, is red, and is a little warm to the touch. it might be spreading in a circle around the sting very slightly, but i am worried about cellulitis. worry?

: Local reactions of warmth, swelling and redness are common after a wasp or yellow jacket or bee sting.  This is a reaction to the venom and local injury.  Cellulitis would take a couple days to take hold.  Meanwhile, apply cool wet compresses to the area and take some acetaminophen/Tylenol.  If you are able to take ibuprofen, this will help with the inflammation if taken over the next few days.

i got stung by what i believe was a wasp almost 2 weeks ago. middle of my calf on the side. its still red, itches and swells up occasionally. the area also now goes from sting down to my ankle. is this "normal" or am i having a weird reaction? thanks?

: If the skin is red and tender all the way to your ankle, or if there is a tender red streak, you may have a secondary infection. Best to see a doctor. (If pain is severe and/or you have fever, get seen within a day or so.)

Benadrly/ baking sod: Remove stinger by scraping along edge of skin with credit card.  Clean area with soap & warm water.  Apply ice in 10 min. Increments; alternating 10 on & 10 off.   You can take tylenol, (acetaminophen) Aspirin or Motrin for pain or Benadryl for swelling.  Make a paste of 2 parts baking soda & 1 part water & apply.   Or you can apply a meat tenderizer poultice to the area. Throat, airway, mouth swelling? Call 911!

Not unexpected: The venom of insect often sensitizes people so that most end up becoming allergic to it. Your initial response was to the chemicals present in the venom and the late response was likely from the allergic response to it.  Try antihistamine and topical cortisone.

Don't know: When it happened but it is not uncommon for the whole foot to swell. If it has been more than a few days you might need antibiotics. Remember the best first side for a sting is household ammonia. It not an allergy when the part of the body next to the sting swells but if your arm swelled after your foot was stung then it would be. Hope you feel better.

Insect bite: It is not unusual to have swelling and feeling hot. It shows more especially if it is on the back of your hands. It will subside with time. Icing and anti histamine and anti inflammatory medicine might help.

Sting: The discoloration signifies that some mild bleeding occurred under the skin. Keep the area clean and apply cortisone type ointment to relieve itching. Pad the area with gauze and paper tape to protect it from friction and pressure. If redness develops, apply an antibacterial ointment. Hydrocortisone cream: apply to the affected area 2-4 times daily as needed for itching.  Taking an over-the-counter antihistamine may also be helpful.  Benadryl (diphenhydramine) will probably help with the itching and redness but may cause sleepiness.  Loratadine (Claritin) and cetirizine (Zyrtec) are non-sedating antihistamine which can be taken daily and may be helpful. If not helpful, you may need a prescription medication.
