dermatologist says my infant son has developed a congenital nevus (specifically a cafe au lait spot) on his face within past few weeks. how likely will this turn into a huge, black, hairy mole? nervous! :-(

Probably low: The cafe au last probably will not become a hairy nevus but should keep an eye out for any new cafe lesions.

Good news is they are laser able however the return frequency is high. If you go that route make sure to go to a dermatologist that performs a lot of these type treatments and start on a small area and wait 6 weeks to see if the spot lightens or darkens.

Not necessarily: Many people who do not have nf have a few café-au-lait spots . Usually start appearing in infancy.If a young child has five or more, at least ½ inch or 15 mm in size post puberty   look for other signs such  as  neurofibromas — tumors along skin and lisch nodules, tiny, noncancerous tumors on the iris (the colored part of the eye). Consult physician to better assess individual signs for diagnosis.

Not necessarily: Multiple "cafe-au-lait" spots on your baby's skin may be simply that - benign spots of pigmentation. It is estimated that about 20% of the population has them. Nodules, neurofibromas and bone abnormalities of tibia, skull, and spine.

Confusing question: Cafe au lait spots are often part of neurofibromatosis, a disorder that can arise as a new mutation in the genes or be passed from a parent. Kids with &gt; 6 spots &gt; 5mm in diameter or adolescents &gt;15mm diameter may have the disorder, but the spots are randomly found on normal people.Discuss with your pediatrician.

Common finding: We usually don't consider the issue of neurofibromatosis in infants unless we start seeing 6 or more hyper pigmented spots around a centimeter or more in size. A few , even if larger are a common finding on normal kids.Your two small spots as an adult does not qualify you  as  carrying the gene.

Tender cafe au lait: these as small flat pigmented birthmarks.  they are sometimes (if more than 6 and larger than 5 mm before puberty) a sign of neurofibromatosis and needs to be checked.  Assuming this isnt the case  - i think its benign and nothing to worry about  - I suspect your pain may be coming from the nipple  -  perhaps from excessive irritation from your bra.   Cafe au lait are usually benign.  Good luck

Doubt it: You can consult with a dermatologist on the emerging treatments for skin lesions but I doubt you will find a good one. They can remove blood vessel marks deep in the skin with lasers that leave the surface alone, but café au lait spots are superficial &amp;  pigment related. Keep track of the size &amp; number of these as they emerge &amp; share this with his doc.

what can i do for brown skin spots above my eyelids?

Depend on cause: An oculoplastic surgeon or dermatologist can determine the cause of pigmented brown spots. Most often these are seborrheic  keratosis or pigmented papillomas , they can be easily removed.  If they are large freckles, they are more prone to reoccur.  Consult your doctor as previously advised.
