No: Although there is a lot of talk about iron absorption while on PPIs on the Internet, the practical aspect of it is that the effect of PPI's on this is very minimal. There is no reason to take extra iron supplements. If you need to be on PPI's for years, it might be reasonable to check a blood count every year or so. Otherwise, you are unlikely to have problems. have gerd so take ppis (pantoprazole) daily. will this affect my absorption of vitamins and nutrients? if so, should i take supplements? thanks

Theoretically: IRON is best absorbed in an acid environment and taking a tablet of Vitamin C if you are taking Iron supplements may be helpful!

See below: Without more information, a solid answer or suggestion is difficult.  There may still be reflux occurring as evidenced by the petechiae, but other issues must be looked at and without more info about his past medical history, i can't suggest anything more other than see you doctor again and discuss you concerns.  The liver enzyme issue needs to be addressed.

Spasm: I think you might be correct with esophageal spasm. This can be secondary to the swallowing of the pills, many at same time, and if it passed fairly quickly, then that also sounds like a spasm.  Drink plenty of water with next round of supplements and take one at a time!

a holistic md is much more likely to be aware of alternatives.

i have gerd and am on nexium but keep getting this recurring burning sensation in the entire right side of my body (side of face, pinky toe and pinky in hand, thigh). i am iron deficient and am on iron supplements right now.

Neurologic: GERD or Nexium does not cause the type of symptoms you are describing.  I am concerned as to why a young male ( unless you have been a vegan for many years) would develop iron-deficiency anemia. Your best bet is to consult a neurologist. The fact that the entire half (including the face) is affected however does not make sense neurologically either.

Uncommon: Most fiber supplements found in the pharmacy or supermarkets are fairly benign when it comes to causing things like acid reflux.

Gerd: Alcohol and oily foods can certainly cause reflux, but it would take more than one beer to elevate the blood pressure and heart rate,although severe discomfort and/or anxiety could. I assume you take a medication like prilosec or nexium (esomeprazole) to control your GERD.

Depends: It depends on the cause of heartburn and the the cause needs to be treated. If you are overweight, losing weight is imperative.
