Pcos: Ovarian cysts are markers for polycystic ovary syndrome, where hyperinsulinemia causes weight gain. Get blood drawn for total and free testosterone, sex hormone binding globulin, dheas, lh, fsh, insulin, cpeptide. If you have pcos, then glucophage (metformin) can reduce Insulin resistance and reduce weight.

They do not : Ovarian cysts  do not cause weight gain. Perhaps you are reading something about polycystic ovarian syndrome. In this case many women who struggle with weight gain also have multiple small ovarian follicles referred to as polycystic ovaries. This is not the same thing as having an ovarian cyst. If you're struggling with weight gain please investigate other causes.

Ovarian cysts: Yes, the pill can decrease formation of ovarian cysts. There are many different kinds of ovarian cysts - some are normal or "physioliogic" and some are abnormal or "pathologic". A pill can suppress the formation of physiologic cysts. These kinds of cysts don't usually need to be removed. Some types of cysts should be removed. Ovarian cysts don't usually cause weight gain.

PCOS?: If you have proven pcos then metformin is used with other medications. If you have other type of cysts metformin is not indicated and you need to be treated differently. Not every cyst is related to your weigt gain. See your doctor.

They can cause pain, and also predispose to ovarian torsion, which cuts off the blood supply to the ovary, causes severe pain, and requires emergent medical attention.  There are other causes of severe right lower quadrant pain that have nothing to do with the ovaries, like appendicitis.  Please seek medical attention ASAP.

Not usually: It should not cause weight gain unless it affect your thyroid function. The only way to know is the get a blood test for thyroid function.  Often, a cyst or nodule will have no effect on how the thyroid is functioning thus should not play a role in your weight.
