is there such a thing as a fecal transplant? what's it for?  please illuminate me.

C diff: Clostridium difficile (c diff) colitis is often very difficult to treat fully, as it is prone to relapse.   Fecal transplant is introducing stool from another person (hopefully that lives in the same house, and without recent exposure to antibiotics) to repopulate the bowel flora to prevent c diff from growing.  It is highly successful, but understandably distasteful.

Mainly for C. diff: Stool transplants are being done primarily for refractory, recurrent C. difficile infection not responding to traditional antibiotics. It should ideally be done by a GI doctor (traditionally with a colonoscopy). With a large focus on gut bacteria, studies have been examining whether stool transplant helps other conditions (i.e, irritable bowel, IBD, obesity, etc)

NOT FOR IBD: No so far the only indication for fecal transplant is pseudomembrane colitis that not responding to a regular treatment or multiple recurrent which is by the way it called antibiotic induced colitis.

Antibiotics: The standard treatment is antibiotics. Flagyl or vancomycin by mouth. Some strains respond better to a combination of oral and iv. Fecal transplants are not fda approved.

Not a transplant: Not really a transplant.  The purpose is to transfer colon bacteria in an individual over run with clostridium difficile.  The transferred bacteria would try to overgrow the c. Diff and restore the normal colon bacteria population.

i've been reading a fecal transplant may help ibs/sibo. is this worth trying? can it be dangerous in any way assuming the donor is healthy?

Worth trying: if the donor is indeed healthy then the only real other risk is the risk of the procedure - which at your 35y/o is indeed minimal. if you're really unhappy with your bowel issues, well worth trying. Find a reputable center though, and preferably one that engages in research.

is it true that fecal transplants have had over 94% success rate in curing c. difficile infections? could fecal transplant be requested for other intestinal issues?

Fecal transplants: Fecal transplants have been very successful in curing c. Difficile infection where antibiotics have failed. I am not aware of any other bowel diseases that this has been used to treat. C difficil is the result of both good and bad bacteria being killed usually by antibiotics allowing the c diff bacteria to proliferate. By transplanting normal bacteria back into the  bowel it restores the balance.

i am a liver transplant patient (13 yrs) and i have noticed that i have fecal matter like pebbles that just come out. i dont even feel it. this will happen daily even after ive had a bm hours later. what is causing this?

: You need to see your MD and get the stool tested.

Yes: Ronald hoffman, md, of the hoffman center in nyc does not do this procedure but has explained it on the air and in his podcasts.  Perhaps his office can refer you.  Peace and good health.

Consult: You will need routine blood tests for infection and a definitiver stool culture. Obtain a GI evaluation, consultation and colonoscopy/.
