Yes: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is one of the best anti-itch antihistamines, and can be taken together with zyrtec and steroids. The only caution is that as you take more antihistamine, there is an increased likelihood of drowsiness. This obviously isn't a problem at bedtime, and will help you sleep through the itchiness, but be very careful about taking extra antihistamines if you'll be driving or operating machinery.

Contact dermatitis: Contact dermatitis is an allergic reaction but not the type that involves histamine.  Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is an antihistamine and treats allergic reactions that have a histamine release, such as hives.  Allergic contact dermatitis is most commonly treated with cortisone creams.  Because Benadryl (diphenhydramine) makes you sleepy, it may seem to relieve itch during the night, but it does not treat contact dermatitis.
