No: Either you have atrial fibrillation or you don't. You can't "increase" it. However, your heart rate may speed up or slow down dramatically w/o any reason. Diltiazem, a non-dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker, keeps your heart from beating too fast, same as beta blockers.

Unexpected: Aside from the expected side effects such as leg edema (which subsides after stopping the drug),  there is no serious side effects from the drug. On the other hand, uncontrolled hypertension poses a great risk to your health (especially the odds of a stroke and cardiac problem).

Several.: It lowers bp, but lowers heart rate.  It can constipate. It is used for arrythymias, bp, migraine prophylaxis, and other things.  I think the most bothersome for patients is constipation, especially those with this problem already.

Accepted Answer

Unlikely: Petadolex is purified butterbur, and is not likely to cause problems with metabolism of a calcium channel blocker in most patients.  Am unaware of any issues secondary to this combination, unless there is a rare cytochrome mutation which would affect metabolism in the liver, well under 5% of all patients.  So, do not worry.

Generic vs brand: There's no difference in the drug but the delivery may differ. The CD is always a 24 hour preparation. The ER version may be either 12 hour or 24 hour, so you must read your label or check with your pharmacist.. The 12 hour versions are  generally smaller mg doses (60, 90, or 120 mg) while the 24 hour is usually 120 mg or higher.

SJS: SJS is a severe allergic reaction and can occur following the use of virtually any medication. I don't know the exact incidence with diltiazem but I do know it's exceptionally rare. I prescribe the medication frequently and in &gt;30 years as a cardiologist, I've never seen a case.

Unknown: The toxic dose in man is not known. Due to extensive metabolism, blood levels after a standard dose of Diltiazem can vary over tenfold. There have been 29 reports of Diltiazem overdose in doses ranging from less than 1 g to 18 g. Sixteen of these reports involved multiple drug ingestion.  22 people recovered with doses up to 10 g. If you're considering it, please seek help. This isn't a good idea.
