can you be fully dilated without having contractions? my water broke at 37 weeks, and when i got to the hospital i was ten centimeters dilated but i didn't have any contractions only symptom was my water broke. is something wrong with my cervix?

Unfelt contractions: Oh, you had contractions alright, you just did not feel them. In order for the  cervix to dilate to 10 centimeters. contractions needed  to occur.  Once the bag of waters breaks, it was imperative to notify the OB MD and go directly to the hospital ("and do not pass go"-Monopoly.) !

False labor?: You are getting probably false labor also called Braxton - Hicks contraction. You are not in real labor because not dilated. There are some causes of Braxton-Hicks contractions. You need to be monitored by your Obstetrician.

im 39 weeks today and have been dilated to a 5, 50% effaced since monday. my contractions haven't been consistent ranging from 30 mins to 15 mins apart..could i asked to be induced and what are my chances they will let it happen?

You could ask: But it sounds like you will have a natural birth. Wait just a little longer as long as you have accurate dates, and hopefully natural labor will occur. Walk lots,be active. This recommendation comes only if the baby is healthy. All the best. 1st baby or more?

Braxton hicks : Some drs. Believe that braxton hicks  play a part in toning the uterine muscle and promoting the flow of blood to the placenta. They're not thought to have a role in dilating the cervix, but might have some impact on the softening of the cervix. However, as braxton hicks contractions intensify nearer the time of delivery, they are called false labor and can minimally dilate and soften the cervix.

Could happen....: Active labor is generally defined as regular contractions in a woman who is dilated to 4 centimeters - and making progress towards delivery. You didn't mention if this is a term pregnancy. If not, call the doctor. There are so many variations, though. I remember a patient who was 5 centimeters dilated for weeks before se actually went into active labor.
