No prevention: Up until now there is no way to prevent type 1 diabetes because the apperance of it has nothing to do with lifestyle it is an autoimmune disorder(you make antibodies against the cells that produce insulin.

Type 1 Diabetes...: In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas makes little to no Insulin and patients must take Insulin by injection to control their blood sugar. Without taking this insulin, a life-threatening situation, called diabetic ketoacidosis, ensues and the person can die without intervention.

Accepted Answer

: Whether a patient with diabetes is “immunocompromised”, we must consider their overall health, including other health conditions, the medications that they use, as well as their age and glycemic management. Simply having diabetes does not, on its own, necessarily mean that the patient is immunocompromised, although as a group, this patient population is more likely to have immune system problem.

Sometimes not always: Answer is "some are, some aren't." both males and females with dm type 1 have more frequent fertility problems, obviously many become parents though.

No: Unfortunately, no.  Insulin is a hormone which, if ingested, would be rendered useless by the juices of the digestive tract.

Not if: They're careful and keep themselves well hydrated and keep their sugar in tight control. Anyone can develop heatstroke if they're not careful and don't pay attention during prolonged exposure to sun and heat.

could you please explain to me why type 2 diabetics don't get acidosis where as type 1 diabetics do?

Resistance vs nothin: Patients with type 2 dm still make insulin, enough to avoid DKA even when in poor control.  However, if control is bad enough, even a patient with type 2 can occasionally get DKA once beta islet cells are spent. Those with type 1 essentially make no insulin, unlike patients with type 2.

why is it that not all type 1 diabetics are offered pancreas transplants?

Accepted Answer

Many reasons: The main reason is that one typically needs to be on anti-rejection medications with any transplant, including islet cell transplants.  These meds carry significant side effects and possible bad long term effects.  That is why it is typically done when one needs a kidney transplant as well.  The other reason is because there are not enough donors of pancreas compared to the number of type 1 diab.

That's old data: It looks like if patient keeps good control through their life, they can have 'near normal or normal life spans

lead normal lives!

is it safe for type 1 diabetics to run?

Accepted Answer

Yes: But always watch your blood sugar carefully and make sure you have something with you if you start to have a low blood sugar reactions. Sometimes the low blood sugar reactions can be delayed after the run so be on the look out. You will  learn how to manage your blood sugars and your activity. Exercise is good for you.
