Rechecking: a LOT. Flagyl fails frequently. The newer DNA tests are probably better than the 50/50 detection rate of the old antigen tests, but CLOSTRIDIUM DIFICILE often comes back. Vancomycin is often the next step.

I don't think anyone: really knows for sure regarding dietary guidelines for people with colonic infections.  Common sense says "binding foods" which include bananas and grains/oats can only sustain you so far, before the lack of animal proteins and fats kicks in.  While that is in and of itself not a bad thing in relation to weight loss, you should consider increasing your diet back to normal within 2 weeks.

ive been on flagyl and cefdinir for 5 days and a liquid diet for 3 for diverticulitis. still running a 99.2 temp in the afternoons and have very dark watery diarrhea. is this normal?

: 99.2F isn't really a fever (98.6F isn't the maximum normal, just the average over the course of a day; up to 99.5 is normal). And if you had fever but the trend in your temperature is downward, probably all is OK. Diarrhea could be a side effect of the antibiotics. If still uncertain, contact the doc treating you; or do so immediately if temp rises again over 100F, or for pain, cramping or blood.

Disease progression.: Barium is an inert compound given during certain xray exams to better visualize bowel.

Pain after a ct scan is much more likely due to progression of existing disease rather than complication of the scan.  Diverticulitis, appendicitis, small bowel diseases, can all be better seen when barium is given during a ct scan.

Greater pain may indicate disease progression or treatment complication.

Metronidazole: Excretion via urine of 60 to 80% of the dose
with fecal excretion of 6% to 15% with unchanged Metronidazole accounting for approximately 20% of the total. Both the parent compound and the metabolites have a half-life of about 8 hours and it should all be gone in 4 to 5 half-lives. Don't drink alcohol until then.

No big deal: Metronidazole (Flagyl® and generics) is commonly used for a variety of infections. It is mostly well tolerated with few side effects, but sometimes causes a bad taste in the mouth or mild nausea. It's often advised to avoid alcohol, but in fact alcohol and metronidazole usually are OK together. Follow your doctor's advice, but most likely you'll have no side effects.
