The regular use: Of diazepam or even alcohol in the past means your liver and metabolic activity are revved up and they have to adjust the dose of anesthesia  for your need and the length of surgery as you may wake up from the anesthesia sooner.

: Can or should? I suspect it is done all the time. I find it more helpful for the individual to work with a life coach/therapist to learn the skills necessary to manage stress, identify stressors and overcome them.

Med safety: The combination of the pregabalin and the diazepam can make you tired and dizzy, so I would advise not taking them at the same time. Also, diazepam is in a class of medications that has the potential to become addictive, so I think that that is important to be aware of. Be sure to not drink alcohol while taking these medications, because that can be an unsafe combination.

Second opinion?: Hi Kelly, this is difficult to answer not knowing more about what's going on with you. Generally speaking, benzos are best used on a short term basis, and there are other medications that are safer over the long term. Strongly recommend that you consider psychotherapy as chronic anxiety can be managed quite effectively with evidence based approaches, e.g., CBT. Hope this is helpful.  Take care.

my mom (86yo) has been on klonopin long-term. she ran out of klonopin 2 days ago, and most likely can't get a refill until monday. i have lorazepam 0.5 mg or diazepam 5 mg, can she take one of these until then? she is having heightened anxiety?

Always tricky: Using expired medications is always tricky business especially things such as controlled substances and narcotics as some will actually more dangerously reactive in the body with time or exposure to air and humidity.  My rule of thumb has always been to recommend patients never go beyond an expiration date when dealing with at least the prescription category of drugs.
