Depends: How much and what segment was resected.  Could be an infectious diarrhea.  Call your surgeon.

Depends on: How much of your colon is left.  If there is more than sigmoid colon left, bile binding agents can help.  But if you only have only rectum left, you can still use motility-reducing agents such as lomotil (diphenoxylat and atropine).  But your body will adjust over time.  Make sure there is no undiagnosed c difficile infection.  Consult with your surgeon or GI specialist.

More info needed: Sometimes, diarrhea can be due to bile salts not being absorbed if the beginning part of the colon is resected. It is not clear what was resected and why.

Depends on : Extent and part of resection.  Diarrhea can occur if ileum is resected more commonly than jejunum.  Even jejunum if is more than, say, 1/3.  But compensatory hyperplasia can occur, so it should improve over time.  Ask a gastroenterologist for a formal opinion.

i had a colon resection surgery one year ago diagnosed stage 1 colon cancer.  i still have bouts of chronic diarrhea.  is this due to the surgery?

Depends: Diarrhea after colon resection can be related to removing a large amount of the colon. Try increasing your fiber to 25 to 35 g daily. This usually helps bind up some of the extra water in the stool. Sometimes other medications are needed as well. Contact your physician if you continue to have problems.

Diarrhea: You have a significant history, but 7 weeks is still long, so I would be safe and get an eval with your doctor as i would have a concern you may have picked up a nosocomial infection like C-Diff causing your diarrhea.  Best wishes.

i had colon cancer 5 years ago. i had to undergo 4 surgeries due to leaking after resection. no colon left except rectum. i have diarrhea 8-10 times daily. other than the obvious inconvenience, are there any health issues to worry about?

Diarrhea: If diarrhea is large volume, there is potential for dehydration and electrolyte abnormalities. Regular monitoring of electrolytes and kidney function (while the diarrhea is being addressed and treated ) is recommended.

colon resection w/9 wk ileostomy.  6 mos post reversal. surgeon plenty of bowel to function normal by now 2 day bowel cycle: max metamucil daily, clustering bulky stools until diarrhea over hours, then imodium (every 2 days) .  how do i get normal?

: You should introduce fiber into your diet, stay well hydrated and increase your physical activity.  With patience an a regular plan should help.  Your surgeon should be of assistance.

Accepted Answer

Depends: That depends on the cause.  In some cases, antibiotics or anti-parasitic drugs are needed.  In others, it's just a matter of keeping hydrated until it runs its course.
