If he is.....: ....Otherwise well, then he is well.  Toddlers get diarrhea sometimes.  If he is otherwise sick, it should be investigated.

Probably not: An association between teething and diarrhea has never been scientifically proven—many unrelated illnesses are blamed on teething, if your child is particularly miserable with excessive crying or fever greater than 100.4, they may not be teething and you should contact your pediatrician. Loose stools are the norm in a 5 month old infant with breast/formula or if you started certain solid foods.

Evaluation: Immediately take your child to her Pediatrician. Keep her hydrated. Check her temperature. But get her to Pediatrician.

No: It is designed for kids 12 &amp; over &amp; adults. The ingredients are not what is used in infants.

Yes: Soy formula is free of the lactose sugar that many infants with diarrhea can't digest well for several days. Some do better on this.I also use applesauce and bananas to help them firm up.

DIARRHEA: Infants with lbm, depending on age, below 3 months give pedialyte, rice water and soy milk. Below 1 year, aside from the above give the brat diet ( banana, rice , apple, tea) no juice. You can also give jello, sprite, 7up. There is a diet instruction you can get from the clinic.

Use Smecta instead: It is safe to use but I will not promote the use of Flagyl or any antibiotic unless there is prove of  bacteria or paracytes. Rather use Smecta or Pectrolyte which has a far better safety profile in kids

Never Normal: Bloody bowel movements are never a normal event.
The color of the blood sometimes gives you clues from where the blood comes from, the brighter the closer to the rectum and colon, the darker the higher in the g.I tract . It can be anything from a fissure in the anal opening due to hard stools, an infection, if your child has been in antibiotics, an allergy to milk, to bowel problems. Dr asap.

i breastfed for 6 wks, then soy formula until he was 3 months. now he is on reg infant formula and has diarrhea. is he ok?  was it bad to switch?

Probably OK: It will probably be ok.  Stick with the same formula and watch for growth.  His bowels will probably adjust just fine, and as long as he is growing normally, don't worry.  Very few children actually need soy formula, they just aren't given a good trial on regular formula.  Spitting and diarrhea are common concerns, but changing back to soy usually does not fix these.
