i have an untreated deviated septum and post nasal drip has been aggravating my lungs. and causing dark mucus with blood to come up randomly. why?

Moisture is needed: Everyone has mucous in back of nose.  If you are bothered by it it is because it is too thick (dry).  Also dry nose will cause it to bleed.  Deviated septum may cause turbulent airflow and worsen dryness.  Hydrate, use humidifier,  nasal saline spray, and you may try Guaifenesin 1200 mg twice daily to take with food and glass of water.

Poor drainage: A deviated septum frequently alters the anatomy of other areas of the nasal passages.  If such, the normal drainage of fluids from the sinus into the nasal passage and then into you pharynx can be blocked.  The drip is from a poor normal drainage.  See an ENT doctor for an evaluation.

Post nasal drip: A deviated nasal septum most commonly causes nasal obstruction/stuffiness on one side.  Post nasal drip can be related to mucus draining from the sinuses into the back of the throat from allergies or sinus infection. Flonase and other nasal steroids take several days to be really effective, but are the most effective treatment for allergies.  An ENT or allergist may be able to sort things out.

Possibly yes: If the deviated septum contributes to sinusitis, then constant nasal drip may occur. Your history of allergies may also contribute to this. If the drainage should become purulent or bloody, you may benefit from antibiotics.

Unlikely: A deviated septum does not usually cause severe post nasal drip.  If you have already seen an ENT doctor and sinusitis has been ruled out, I would consult an allergist.  The major symptom of a deviated nasal septum is difficulty breathing through the side of the nose where the septal cartilage is deviated.

It can contribute: Are your symptoms affecting always 1 side more than the other? Are your symptoms getting worse?it may be that you suffer from a different condition in top of your deviated septum? Have you tried anything OTC- nasal saline? Either way you will probably need an ENT eval.

Post nasal drip: No it doesn't.   Consider use of neti pot for the mucus. Mix ¼ tsp salt w 1 cup lukewarm water. More salt can also be used. Place solution in neti pot.  Tilt head & pour solution into 1 nostril. Blow nose lightly & spit out any liquid that drains into throat. Repeat on other side. This can be done in the evening before you go to bed & again in the morning.  Take care.

Nasal fracture: You may have a post nasal drip with a broken nose as well as a deviated septum treatment cosists of antihistamines or possible surgery on the nose.
