No worries: Only certain throat cancers, not oral cancer in general, is due to HPV; and those cancers are caused only by HPV16. So you definitely are not at risk from your current HPV infection. And despite all the media attention to oral cancer from HPV, it remains rare, far less common than other cancers like breast, lung, colon, even in people with oral HPV16 (which you probably don't have). No worries!

surprise bp check at dentist. was incredibly anxious before appt and more so during the surprise check. took as soon as i sat down. 128/74. had two mugs coffee earlier. thin and healthy, brisk walking 7 miles per day. can i ignore this high reading?

: I would not consider this a high reading in the setting as described. Feel free to invest in a home BP Monitor and take your BP several times/day and several days in a row, preferably when you are relaxed. This would be a more accurate reflection of what you have. Stress brings out stress hormones that raise the heart rate and pressure. In this setting it is called white coat hypertension.

is pulp capping a good substitute for a root canal? i've been told i need to have a root canal, but am scared to go ahead with it. i've done seem reading, and pulp capping seems like it might be an option. can i ask my dentist about it, or am i misunderst

A : A pulp cap is not a substitute for a tooth that may require root canal therapy. The necessity for root canal therapy is based on a number of factors including the tooth symptoms, the extent of the decay and/or tooth fracture, the evaluation of the xray to determine whether an abscess is present.  Have your dentist assess your tooth and explain to you why the root canal is the treatment of choice.  Root canal treatment techniques have dramatically improved in recent years and if it is necessary you will be pleasantly surprised.  Fear not!

False: A dna test can be done with accurate results from  swabs other than the oral cavity.

Call your doctor: You've written previously that your doctor prescribed you an antibiotic to help with the infection until you can see your dentist.  It is untreated tooth abscesses and infections which can be very dangerous.  You're on at least partial treatment until seeing your dentist.  Rinsing your mouth with salt water ; tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain may help. For additional help with this today, please call your doctor.

A : A basic explanation is that gingivitis affects the soft tissues surrounding the teeth and is quite reversible if the irritants are removed.  If the gum disease process continues or if other factors exist the bone support surrounding the teeth becomes involved and is considered periodontitis.  This is a more advanced form of gum disease and requires more aggressive treatment.  This may or may not include surgical intervention.The differential diagnosis and treatment should be left to a qualified general dentist or periodontist.

i am in college and  recently been having issues with reading comprehension, mental math, and focus. is it possible i have undiagnosed add?

Possible: Often, when we are challenged beyond what we are used to (as happens in college), we find that our focus isn't as good as we once thought. And though possible that you have ADHD that has only now revealed itself, a good doc must rule out other causes first (medical probs, exhaustion, depression, hormone imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, etc). Only then can you be confident. Find a good doc! :)

Reading &amp; IQ: It is best for you to get tested by a clinical psychologist who specializes in learning disorders and Aspergers.  Group IQ tests such as given in schools are ok but not nearly as accurate and detailed as a one-to-one w/a pro.  Same goes for achievement tests.  Whatever the numbers say, just work on being the best person you can be, like the rest of us.  Peace and good health.

Not just treating and filling a cavity, but diagnosing and eliminating the cause of that cavity as well as addressing the social and psychological implications that may contribute to or be affected by your oral disease.
