my father is having dental work done soon. he takes a  blood thinner. to whom should he discuss it with, the dentist or his md?

Dentist first: The main criteria is- what kind of dental work? Not much of an issue for fillings. It’s mostly an issue for extractions, surgery, and perhaps periodontal (gum) treatment. The second criteria are concerns with any heart issues and not only blood thinning medications. It is important that your dad's dentist know his entire medical history and consult with his md.

does it bleed in teeth's root canal treatment? i m asking since i take some blood thinner medicine regularly for some other disease and i can't stop my blood thinner. my pt/inr is approx 2.5, do i need to worry for bleeding while root canal treatment?

: The short answer is no!  I also take blood thinners and as a dentist i would not be concerned in having a root canal treatment procedure.

4 wisdom teeth out on friday. swelling worse than ever. back on blood thinner. sinus pressure horrid. what can i do for sinuses & to decrease swelling?

Pressure: First, i would see your ENT or pcp to make sure the swelling/pain in the sinuses is not a complication from your procedure. Especially since you are on a blood thinner. Use ice for now- no nsaids, asa, intra nasal sprays or oral decongestants.

Yes: Any dental work releases bacteria into the blood and a blood culture taken after dental work may be positive, even though the body will likely clear the bacteria, on its own. Other tests may be affect a little, depending on if any medications were injected as part of the dental work.

Bacteremia risk: There is a transient introduction of bacteria into the blood stream when you brush/floss--a dental procedure exacerbates this. While it might not be enough to overwhelm your defenses and cause illness, .

how long before someone can get blood poisoning after dental work?

Accepted Answer

Transient, low risk: There is a possibility of a transient bacteremia after minor oral surgery, extraction, gum treatment, etc. But this usually does not cause any problem since your immune system can handle it. But if you are immunologically compromised or have a heart murmur, it is better to be covered with an antibiotic one hour prior to the procedure. Ask your physician or dentist for advise on this.

See a doctor:  Swallowing blood after dental work should not result in fresh blood in the stool immediately after the procedure. Gastrointestinal bleeding can have many potential causes, including  hemorrhoids, ulcers, gastritis, diverticulosis, and cancer. The bleeding as well as the cause can be serious, so see a doctor right away.

Discuss: Discuss your liver function studies with your personal Physician.  Doubtful that your dental work would affect the blood tests.
