can i give my 2 year old delsym (dextromethorphan) for her cough?

Yes an no: Dextromethorphan (component in delsym) should only be used at the appropriate dose aafter your pediatrician made sure that the child does not have pneumonia or asthma. It is for symptomatic relief and you can easily overdose a child. Do not exceed more than 1 mg per each 2.5 pounds of weight. Example: a 25 pound child should not receive more than 10 mg of dextromethorphan.

dr said get regular dayquil or mucinex for my 10 1/2 year old. he is 5 foot 6 and 136 pounds is it safe to give him one that the active ingredients in each 20 ml are: dextromethorphan 20mg and guaifenesin 400mg? if it is ok is 20ml the right dose?

: In children under 12, adult medications should be used with caution. If your son is experiencing severe cough, start the medication at 15ml and watch carefully for side effects. Medications should not be used for more than 3-5 days. Make sure he is drinking lots of fluids to help thin the mucus, and give him additional electrolytes such as gatorade daily.

i was told give my 2yr old benylin (dextromethorphan) cuz he's 48 lbs and 3.5ft tall. it says 6 and up 10ml so i only want to give 5ml cuz hes same as 6 but still only 2?

Not the weight: That matters , it's the age,  for the maturity of the CNS  and the unpredictable reactions to these drugs in toddlers and patients younger than age 6. You didn't specify what formulation you wanted to use. Moreover your son needs to be checked for his weight: way above, he is tall too, but still he is obese, kindly get referred to a pediatric endocrinologist, good luck

Yes: Yes, and they can be given together in the proper dosage.

Accepted Answer

Yes, may not help: Mucinex (guaifenesin) dm contains the same drug as delsym (a cough suppressant) so do not give those together; neither will likely shorten or cure anything, but one or the other may make your child more comfortable or  help him/her sleep.  Avoid delsym with asthma , and see your doctor if not better in a few days.

Yes..but...: The components of these medicines do not interfere with one another. However, cough is a natural protective response in a kid that needs to move secretions up from deep in the chest. I don't recommend delsym in kids under 6.

Coughing: If you child's cough is due to a post nasal drip, claritin may be enough to control the cough. However, if that doesn't work you can give your child both medications

i am a 21 year old, 200lb man, i  just drank 20 ml of delsym (dextromethorphan) (30mg per 5 ml) and i need to know if i should do something or if i'll be ok?

Accepted Answer

Should be fine: But you could hallucinate and be groggy. I would just go to bed and not operate anything more difficult than the water dispenser on the fridge.  Drink a couple glasses of water to make sure you are well hydrated, so you don't feel like a slug tomorrow.  More doesn't necessarily mean more effective. And do not do cough meds for entertainment.

Benadryl okay: Benadryl is okay for a 5.5 year old to take.  Delsym is for those over 12 years of age.
