how to tell difference n kidney pain and back muscle pain. my left upper back and side hurt randomly. hurts when i move or take deep breaths?

Back pain: Kidney pain is generally felt in the lower back - the flanks more precisely.  Pain in your upper back that increases when you take deep breaths more closely relates to either a lung/pleura issue or musculoskeletal issue.

Suspect infection: That vibrating feeling, if with deep breath in/out in particular, could be an indicator of a lower respiratory tract infection (like a "walking pneumonia"). Probably best to see dr / urgent care and get a chest x-ray.

pain for couple days in left side of back. hurts a lot when i move, tense up my muscles and take deep breaths. pain is sharp. what can this be?

Muscle strain: You may have strained some muscles in your back.  Now when you stretch then you feel the pain.  Try a non steroidal like ibuprofen.

if i stand up straight and take a deep breath im fine. if i slouch and take a deep breath, or even just bend over, my upper middle back hurts. is this muscle? or something worse?

: Yes, probably a musculoskeletal pain and it should be alleviated after taking 2 tablets of advil or tylenol so you should give it a try. If it is, symptom should be self limited and resolved after a couple days. If symptom persists, gets worse or fever occurs, then you should see your doctor. Good luck.

Follow up with MD: Since you have been treated by your doctor and diagnosed as pulled muscle and you still have pain it needs to be re evaluated by your doctor and you may need some tests to find the cause of persistant pain in left back.

Pleurodynia: Or pain with breathing can. be from infectious pleuritis - a viral illness causing inflammation of the layer of tissue that covers the lungs - aka pleura. This causes pain with breathing as the lungs expand and rub against the inflamed pleura. It resolves with time . Ibuprofen may help .

Back pain: This could be localised muscle spasm or fibrosis that responds to heat and message. A less common cause would be a pneumothorax where one of your lungs has partially collapsed. If the pain persists despite trying local measures, a chest x-ray should be done to rule out a pneumothorax. For local muscle irritation that persists, a cortisone injection by your physician can be helpful.

Yes: Muscle spasm is common. You could also have inflammation in the chest cavity. If you have cough or fever see a doctor for evaluation.

Muscle strain: Pain w/specific movement is most likely due to muscle strain. Should be manageable w/OTC pain relievers. If not, need to see your Family Doc. Definitely sooner than later if numbness/tingling/weakness or unexplained fever. But by your description, sounds most consistent w/muscle strain. RICE:Rest is fine for strains/sprains. Can you apply Ice to area? Doubt area amenable to Compression &amp; Elevation
