The AAP states...: The american academy of pediatrics has recently announced that under the age of 6 years old decongestants and cough medications have not been proven effective. Having said that, your pediatrician could more clearly advise you as to exactly what measures should be used if your 3 year old has a cold or allergy that is triggering the congestion in question. Most suggest nasal saline and mild suction.

See below: It maybe allergies. You can try a teaspoon of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) every 6 hours. Or a teaspoon of Claritin or zyrtec once a day.

Family Practice: There are several otc decongestants that are commonly use with children over 2yo. They come in various forms. Take as directed and usually not to use longer than a few days in a row.

None: Studies in the US find little or no benefit to use of these products in kids under 6. The frequency of ER visits due to random overdoses lead to a re-evaluation of their use/benefits. A little chocolate or honey &amp; lemon  are old fashion treatments that help some, along with assuring good hydration.

FDA approved: Over the counter cold medications are approved by the FDA for children 2 and older, when taken at the recommended doses.

is there a decongestant for nose & cough that i can give my 11 year old son?  his weight is 105 pounds and he takes 50mg of zoloft & 2mg of abilify (aripiprazole).

Colds: You can trial any OTC tussin DM product you like to see if they will help his symptoms - it is really variable on how much they help. You can also use warm fluids with honey to help soothe his cough. Cough is a protective function so suppressing it aggressively is counter-productive. Saline nasal spray to aid in thinning the secretions in his nose and sinuses is also worth trying.

YES, If His: Pediatrician prescribes. Fluticasone is a nasal spray which reduces nasal allergy, inside swelling and congestion. Antihistamine/ decongestant is given for cold symptoms, cough- for a short period of time. If you have any question about the treatment, better talk to the prescribing doctor.

i'm 25 y.o. and have been diagnosed with etd since 10 years old. since then i have a sensation of unilateral left ear fullness which gets temporary relieved few minutes or hours after nasal decongestants. should i consider surgery ? if yes, why ?

: You should only consider to have a procedure done for opening the eustachian tube if you are bothered too much with the symptom and you are quite dependent on nasal decongestants.

Avoid decongestants: In general, decongestants are not really effective long-term therapies for allergies. Generally, the effects of decongestants are to constrict blood vessels, throughout the body, which really does nothing to treat the causative problem, which is inflammation related to the allergen. Antihistamines, nasal steroids, allergen avoidance, and leukotriene antagonists are more effective.

im currently getting chronic sinusitis symptoms i have had this issue for months maybe a year. i have taken several different decongestants/sprays. nothing's else helping. i've got this every day and it's draining me and making feel really tired ?

Sinusitis: Your sinusitis may be due to allergies It Might be worthwhile to schedule an appointment with an allergist for evaluation and possible treatment
