By 4 month?: Baby formula is essentially made from milk-protein and so it is dairy, just well-processed. By 4 months, baby can have cereal, stage1 baby-food etc..A bit of tasty ice cream to try is not a bad thing either. The reason  regular milk is not used because it does not have a good balance of  important substances such as faffy acid and certain vitamins etc compare to formula..

I love dairy: Dairy products are not good for those who have sensitivity to it, during the time that our pastures have infections or having spoiled products that can transmit diseases and infections. Otherwise there is no indication that dairy is not good for everyone.

Sx : Allergic reactions usually occur from minutes to 2 hours after ingestion of dairy. The symptoms may be flushing, itching, hives, nasal congestion, abdominal upset or even asthma. In severe cases, death may result.
This must be distinguished from the gastrointestinal symptoms when one is lactose intolerant .  Positive skin test or blood test is helpful,but oral challenge is the gold standard.

Carefully: Be very careful gaining weight deliberately because you may give yourself a lifetime of difficulty losing it. You are just at the age when your metabolism should naturally slow down & you will gain weight anyway. Eat a good amount of fruits & vegetables. Easy on the carbs (potatoes, bread, pasta, rice.) avoid straight sugar or starch. Daily moderate exercise to shape and keep heart safe.

Almost never : Dairy can cause immune responses.    I recommend a non dairy alternative.

Lactose Intolerance: Lactose intolerance occurs in people who can't digest lactose, the sugar found in milk &amp; other dairy products, such as ice cream and soft cheeses. People who are lactose intolerant don't make enough lactase, a natural enzyme made by your intestinal tract that digests lactose.  Symptoms include gas, bloating, stomach cramps, and diarrhea.

Testing: There are simple blood tests for IGE to various foods that correlate highly with pin prick and other forms of testing. Reactions to dairy are not always allergic, and may be simple intolerance to the lactose sugar in the  product.

Check with peds: Ask your pediatrician but i believe it is recommended not to introduce dairy until at least 10 months to one year of age.  In addition, after age two your child should drink fat free milk.

Yes: Dairy is important because it provides high quantities of calcium which is important to bone health primarily. Vitamin d is added to most dairy products as an artificial ingredient, again for bone health. In addition, remember, dairy products are widespread - cheese, yogurt, ice cream in addition to milk.  However, you can take ca+d supplements instead and then you don't need dairy at all.
