my 7 week old breastfed baby passed a dark green stool. he has been fussing at the breast and vomiting after feeds. help! what is wrong with him?

Nothing important: The stool color is created by ultra-green bile added to it during processing. It will undergo changes through a range of greens to yellow &amp; then browns as gut bacteria digest/metabolize nutrients in the poop. Green only means it moved through faster before germs could change it. It does not define an illness. He may or may not be reacting to something you ate.

my breastfed baby is 3 month old. now it seems my milk supply reduced.baby cries at breast and not passing stool for 3 days.now at this stage if i feed my baby every 2 hour on schedule can i establish my milk supply?

: The most common reasons for a decrease in milk supply is decreased feeding times. When a breastfeeding mother reduces either the length of time breastfeeding or decreases number of feeding times per day significantly, her body responds by producing less milk. As can starting certain medications, estrogen contraceptives or being pregnant again. Try feeding every 3 hours consistently.

Something she ate: Change in diet can cause changes in the appearance of stools.  In a breastfeeding baby, that is what the mother ate.

Irritable: Your baby may be getting dehydrated from the diarrhea.. Have him checked by his pediarician to make sure he is well hydrated.

Hard to say: A breastfed infant can pas a smear every feed or have one cradle filler once a week. If it is soft when they go it is considered normal. A 4 mo has an average of 1 hr/d of fussing for no known reason. I would not assume this is abnormal or in need of anything.

Not necessarily: Breast fed babies can stool some after every feed (usually a little smear) or have a cradle filler once a week. I would not consider this unusual or worrisome. If you have another reason to think baby is sick that would be what I would pursue.

Bloody milk stools: The most common cause of blood in the stool of an exclusively breast fed infant is from ingesting blood from a cracked or inflamed nipple.  Other causes include rectal trauma from temperature taking, or intestinal obstruction (this is very uncommon, and usually associated with pain, vomiting, poor feeding, etc.)  Breast milk allergy is very rare.

Infant feeding: Lentil is an excellent source of fiber and nutritious as well. It is harder to digest especially by a 4 mo. Current thinking is to start solid foods that are nutritious and easy to digest. Cereal is not necessarily the first food to give now. It has been found that meat 
and /or vegetables are good to start with especially when baby is breastfed. The lentil caused  the way her stools came out.

why is it necessary to give vitamin d supplements to my breastfed baby?  doesnt human milk have all the essential nutrients for babies?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Breastmilk is complete, as long as the mother has adequate nutritional stores.  Vitamin d deficiency is very common, due to lack of sun exposure. If mom has adequate vitamin d levels from either sunshine or supplements, breastmilk should be complete.  One study suggests that moms need to take at least 2000 iu of vitamin d daily to allow adequate levels in their breastmilk.
