Low vitamin D: requires supplementation of D3.  Please do what your doc says but 2000 IUs is fairly low.  Most of my patients take 5000 IUs daily.  Your doc will probably re-test in a few months and you can ask him/her about the dose then.  Peace and good health.

Nephrologist: Treatment of vit d deficiency in the presence of abnormally low vit d levels requires serial vit d levels to judge the appropriate dose and,in my opinion, the attending nephrologist is best qualified to to this. Vit d doses for vit d deficiency in patients without chronic kidney disease tend to be lower and I note that nephrologists may prescribe 1200 units as a starting dose for some patients.

Vitamin D : I am happy to hear you are wiling to take vitamin d. You are ahead of the curve.  You will read a lot of different recommendations online about this. I have my patients take 2000 units to 5000 units/day. It is, actually, safe to take up to 10, 000 units/day.

VIT D needed?: Only your team can answer this after reviewing your history, doing a physical exam and maybe more lab tests.

Meet with them.  They will better know the levels of D where you live.

Not only can,should!: The recommended daily amount of vit d is insufficient for most people. Most adults need to take 5-8, 000 iu/day during the winter months to achieve optimal levels. It is considered safe to take 10, 000 iu/day and generally one must take 40, 000 iu/day to become toxic. In summer you can get enough d from being in the mid-day sun without protection, but taking d is not harmful. See comment:.

DON'T TAKE D2!!!: STOP TAKING Vit D2 immediately. An analysis of 50 studies showed those who take D3 had a 6% decrease in mortality whereas D2 actually increased mortality by 2%!

Don't need magnesium: Total calcium intake (diet  supplements) needs to be about 1500 mg of elemental calcium/day. Vitamin d is usually about 2.000 u. Of d3/day, but can be more if your level starts out low. Check w/your doctor.
