multiple swollen lymph nodes on back of neck and side for months. ct scan shows no lymphoma and im not sick. they wont go away, why? ent not worried.

Scalp issues: The lymph nodes you described often get enlarged at trivial stimulation, e.g., dandruff. You may wish to try washing your hair and scalp daily, with any shampoo. It may take a few months for the nodes to regress. If the nodes more than double in size, do see a doctor.

might have lymphoma and had a ct scan done. it showed adenopathy. what now?

Nodes and lymphoma: Well, as with any cancer diagnosis you must have a tissue diagnosis.  This means one of the lymph nodes needs to be removed and looked at by a pathologist.  Only than can you move to the next step.

is it possible to have a normal negative ct scan yet still have lymphoma or will the ct scan determine some abnormality which then leads to a biopsy?

Accepted Answer

Yes to both.: You can have an indolent lymphoma - abnormal immune cells in the lymphatic system - but in such a stage that the lymph glands aren't yet (or won't be) enlarged. The CT scan only points out glands that are enlarged or suspicious in the region that was scanned (an enlarged gland in the neck will not show up on a CT scan of the chest). Without an abnormal/enlarged gland, there's nothing to biopsy

D/w MD: you should share your concern with your oncologist. talk and discuss in detail about the result of the CT scan, what is the next move, treatment options etc.

Your Doctor can guid: The doctor who has done tests for you can and should guide you and explain what the test results mean.
If your ct scan is normal, that means you have no lymphoma or any other tumor(because they would be seen in the ct). You can ignore the comment of slightly enlarged liver. It is best not to get anxious and keep doing more tests because the test results can mislead you and take you on a wrong cour.

Not sure what you...: ...mean but if you are asking if the radiation exposure from just one CT scan is enough to cause cancer, I think that would be exceedingly unlikely.  There are inherited traits that lead to increased cancer risk with radiation exposure but even then it would be a very rare occurrence.  Cannot say it is impossible, though. That is why scans have to be ordered when truly necessary, not capriciously.

would an mri on the abdomon show lymphoma as good as a ct scan would?

Yes, better: Magnetic resonance imaging is better for soft tissue tumor compared to Computed tomography.  evaluation.  However, depending on the etiology of lymphoma, presence of contraindications for MRI, such as pacemaker, metallic dyes in tattoos, metallic implants, CT scan maybe the only option as diagnostic imaging of choice.

would a ct scan rule out lymphoma, myeloma, or leukemia. and are there any non invasive tests to rule those illnesses out?

No: Imaging would not rule out hematologists malignancies. In the right clinical context, diagnosis may include specialized blood and bone marrow studies.

: I answered this question before. Node biopsy or resection for pathology has to be done for the diagnosis of malignant node or lymphoma. Along with other clinical symptoms, signs and laboratory results, CT findings may suggest the diagnosis of lymphoma but it is not conclusive without pathology.

i am going through testing for possible hodgkins lymphoma. my ct scan reported anterior mediastinal hazy density. should this be biopsied? does this mean a mass?

Possible mass: You may need a PET thoracic scan and bio marker panels to determine the cause. Please follow up with your Pulmonologist.
