You may: A small percentage of patients will get a pneumothorax ( air around the lung) during a lung biopsy. Of these only a small percent would need any treatment for it ( a chest tube or small thoracic vent) to remove the air and allow the lung to re expand. The risk depends on the location of the lesion and underlying condition of the lungs.
In most patients it is a relatively safe procedure.

The more common is via bronchoscopy and the side effects of this include coughing up some blood, which should be small amounts and should stop after a few days. Other possible side effects include low grade fever, cough. If you are coughing significant amounts of blood, high fever or short of breath, then you need to go to the er.

Variable: A bronchoscopy with or without biopsy is fairly straightforward. The general description you've provided suggests a child that at baseline is chronically ill. Chances are the length of stay is more a matter of how long the child needs to recover from anesthesia in relation to baseline breathing challenges. Often this can be over night or it can be several days in a chronically ill child.

Sorry to hear the alarming news. I hope you are coping ok. Pericardial tears are somewhat unusual to find incidentally because the pericardium is a very very strong tissue. Typically we see them as a result of blunt trauma to the chest or abdomen and they are commonly associated with herniation as you described. This requires management by a specialist. Hope this helps.

No, of course not: Pneumothorax and hemothorax are two of the known complications that can happen with a lung biopsy if a patient is unlucky. A patient is responsible for his bills if he has a good outcome, a medium outcome, or a bad outcome; as long as it isn't some truly strange case in which the doctor(s) and/or hospital did something unusually bad or criminal.

How : How long one must stay after a lung biopsy is dependent on which biopsy methodology is used. There are three main ways to biopsy the lungs: with a bronchoscope down the trachea, with a thin needle through the chest wall, or via a surgical incision performed by a surgeon. These three techniques are each useful for different things. A bronchoscope can reach things that are more centrally located and are useful for biopsy of certain types of lung conditions that affect the more peripheral lung tissue. Needle biopsies are useful for peripheral lung nodules and masses. Surgical biopsies with our without using video assistance are also useful for peripheral nodules and masses and are also very helpful for interstitial lung conditions like pulmonary fibrosis. Normally, biopsies using the bronchoscope or a needle are outpatient procedures and patients go home the same day after making sure that there is not bleeding or a collapsed lung. Patients needing a surgical biopsy must stay longer, but usually just a few days.
