i know it varies from lab to lab but what is the "normal" range for c-reactive protein? i have 0.9mg/l. the lab report does not state it was hs-crp.

Less than 1mg: is considered normal.  FYI it is a very non specific test that measures inflammation in the body that could occur in vascular diseases as well in arthritis, infections and carries increased risk of  CAD. CDC Recommends to use average of 2 test 2 weeks apart to access the risk of vascular disease. Control other CAD factors like DM  and Exercise may reduce CRP

i had my c-reactive protein level checked and it was 1.55. the ref range said anything under .80 is normal. is 1.55 considered really high??

No: Truth be told, I wouldn't be much concerned. Nobody really knows what to do with this number if you feel well. The stuff's produced by the debris in advanced atherosclerotic plaques, giving rise to what I think is the myth that "high C-reactive protein is a coronary risk." And values fluctuate with minor illnesses. If your physician isn't worried, I wouldn't be either.

Having said that, the information you provided suggests inflammation, not necessarily infection. How do you FEEL?: A positive ANA is common in young women and most never go on to have any problems. Reference ranges even for arcane stuff like Scl-70 are set so that several percent of healthies fall above. If you feel well and it's not super-elevated, I"d ignore it. The C-reactive protein business is famously nonspecific and I think it gets too much attention. Look at the big picture -- how you FEEL.

CRP: C-reactive protein (CRP) is a non-specific test used to detect inflammation if there is suspicion of tissue injury or infection in the body, but the test cannot tell where or what  is causing it. CRP is not diagnostic of any condition, but it can be used together with signs and symptoms and other tests to evaluate for an acute inflammatory condition. The value of 3 is non-specific.

Be careful: There's little reason to have vitamin levels assayed if you're on a halfway-normal diet. The two exceptions are vitamin d, which is widely deficient, and b12, which vegetarians and folks with certain subtle illnesses may lack. There are some non-evidence-based (read, crooked) labs that encourage fringe practitioners to order vitamin levels shotgun. Get with a scientific holistic practitioner.

hello,had my blood test done today. everything fine, but i am confused with one thing. crp level is within the range, but esr is elevated (29). what does it mean? i feel good, all other tests fine, no leucocytosis etc. please help?

How high?: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, CRP and ESR are different tests and one can be elevated while the other is not. It would have helped had you provided the actual results.

Need more info: I can't comment without more info- are you talking about ng/ml or nmol/l? What is the lab's normal range? Diff. Labs have different normal ranges and without this info the values you give are meaningless to me. But CRP is high, suggesting systemic inflammation. There can be many causes.
