i had a cracked tooth on the back left side crowned (same day) 2 weeks ago.  constant pain in gums  (that goes into my lower  jaw) around crown and "squishy to touch" in front of tooth.  taking lots of pain meds. is this normal?  not sensitive to cold or

Not normal: Having a your gums feel squishy is a sign that something is not right. The tooth may have necrotic pulp and is beginning to abscess, or there may be something under the gums. If you are in a temporary crown there may be temporary cement or retraction cord left under your gums. It would be a good idea to go back to your dentist and have him/her check the situation.

Very likely: Those symptoms are in fact characteristic of a advanced decay resulting in inflammation of the central tissue of the tooth from bacterial invasion to the tubules ahead of the open cavity. The pressure sensitivity when biting suggest that central tissue inflammation has spread to the ligament that holds the tooth in the bone.  Please see a dentist quickly and get a pulp vitality test and x-ray.

Go back: Go back to your dentist to have that tooth evaluated. There are a number of things that can be done in such cases. It might require refilling the tooth with another type of filling and a sedative base. There are other options and your dentist will go over them with you.

Sensodyne toothpaste: Since you already got it checked out, probably nothing serious at this point. I would recommend using some toothpaste such as sensodyne to help sooth the nerve and this should reduce the sensitivity. Use regularly for 3-4 wks. If not better by then, reconsult your dentist/endodontist for eval of possible cracked tooth etc...Good luck.

Gingival Bleeding: Apparently the gum tissue is inflamed. It's terrific that you floss multiple times a day, but great home care is not a substitute for professional treatment. Please see a local dentist.

Possibly: Ask a dentist who can actually examine you and give you guidance. The gums may or may not grow back. Use a desensitizing toothpaste. Also have the dentist or dental hygienist go over tooth brushing (soft tooth brush in a circular motion) and flossing techniques with you.

Examination: I suggest you have the tooth examined by a local dentist to determine the cause of your sensitivity. Could be gum recession due to periodontal disease, a cavity, a fracture, a loose filling, etc. Can't possible know for sure without examining you.

For example, if it is due to a cavity, then the advice would be to have the tooth restored with a filling. Since we cannot tell over the internet why your tooth is sensitive, you'll have to see a local dentist for evaluation.
