how do you tell when to change the height of crib mattresses?

Developmentally: If your baby can sit up on his/her own and is showing signs of trying to pull up to a standing position, it's time to drop the crib mattress as low as it will go.  Don't wait until your baby is already able to stand up; some six-month-olds have fallen out of their cribs!  once you lower the mattress, it's time to take out accessories like bumpers as well.

: Head banging on its own without any other indications of autism, is not diagnostic or even concerning. Up to 15% of non-autistic infants/toddlers head bang their heads to self sooth.

See your doctor: It would be unusual for a 3 month old to have allergies leading to nasal congestion. At that age, their nose is small, so it does not take much to plug it up. If they have had the congestion going on for more than a few days, is associated with fever (a temperature over 100.4f) or fussiness or poor eating, then needs to be seen soon.

i laid my 4-mo baby in his crib, i left the room & returned shortly, then i heard him loudly gasp/shriek and then started big crying. he seems fine now. im unsure what he was doing before i returned, but hes trying to roll often. what happened??

: WE do not have telescopic or super vision here.  You may want to get a video recorder to see if you can figure out what happened.  Gut gas?, jolted awake by noise? hungry? Got arm caught in crib? are a few guesses.  Observe and take good notes.

Put him in it: Repetition and routine are the most important factors to getting your baby in the crib. Put him in whenever he sleeps whenever you can. Put him in for naps and nighttime. Put him in when he seems sleepy, rubbing his eyes. Stay next to him in the crib and give him support without taking him out. Talk to him and soothe him with your touch while in the crib, then extend the times you leave him alone.

No: Crib bumpers have been shown to be a major suffocation and strangulation risk for infants. When preparing your baby's crib, keep this in mind: bare, boring, and no crib bumpers. Use only a tight fitting mattress and crib sheet in your baby's crib.

No: This is called co-sleeping and is encouraged in many cultures. Before you start co-sleeping, you should be aware of 2 things. The first is that it is associated with a higher risk of sids. The second is that you will need a plan for getting your infant out of your bed at a specific age. Without this plan, I have seen co-sleeping go on into the grade school years.
