D-Mannose better: The component in cranberry juice that prevents 90% of uti's is d-mannose. Taking d-mannose is a more efficient way to prevent uti's. 1/2 tsp 1-2x/day is usually effective. See http://bit.Ly/1hzudgk

Research does show cranberry juice can help prevent recurrent uti's but you would have to drink large amounts to get adequate amounts of d-mannose, in fact we don't know exactly how much.

It is supposed ...: To acidify the urine, which theoretically kills or prevents bacterial growth in the urine.  Most studies show this really doesn't work. The urine is not acidic enough to do any good.  You are better off drinking plenty of water, which helps flush bacteria from the bladder.  If symptoms persist more than 2-3 days, see your doctor to get checked.  Good luck!

Possibly: The evidence as to whether cranberry juice prevents recurrent utis is mixed. Some small studies suggest a benefit, but a larger cochrane review that included larger studies suggested little or no benefit. For certain people..: There are some studies to suggest that drinking cranberry juice can help prevent utis in woman who have had numerous previous utis. This is about the only group that has shown some benefit. For those who have never had a uti, it doesn't seem to help. It doesn't help to treat a uti, either. It doesn't seem to help males.

See below.: Cranberry juice is commonly used as there is a plausible weak benefit as an anti infective.  However, there is no study that clearly demonstrates this effect.  There is little downside to taking it other than weight gain and possible increase in reflux irritation.

Possibly: Cranberry juice has a substance called tannins which make it harder for bacteria to attach to the bladder and cause infections.  Cranberry can help some people reduce the risk of recurrent urinary tract infections.  Drinking cranberry juice shouldn't hurt and may help.  If your symptoms are not improving, should be evaluated by your physician.
