Fluid in lungs: Have your listen with a stethoscope to your breathing. You may need an x-ray of your lungs but the implication of your story is that you have some retained fluid deep in your lungs. There are multiple reasons for that which have too little space to explain here.

why am i having a crackling sound in lungs when exhaling?

Bronchitis?: One explanation for crackling and wheezing sounds on exhalation is inflammation / infection of the breathing tubes (bronchi).  This is called bronchitis.  Pneumonia and partial occlusion of bronchi (by mucus or a foreign body) are other things that can cause expiratory crackling.  Some people with 'fluid in the lungs' or pulmonary edema may also have expiratory crackling sounds.

i am a 50 year old male with no history of serious illness.  recently i have noticed a slight crackling sound in my lungs with normal inhale/exhale breathing.  should i be concerned or is this normal?

Most : Most definitely not normal. Could be due to nightime gastric reflux causing stomach acid to go into your lungs or something more serious. I would be especially concerned if you are a smoker. You need to see a doctor and be examined, probably have a chest xray done.

Post nasal drip: You have post nasal drip, you can use saline nasal spray or rinse, gargle with salt water &amp; try  to unclog your ears by closing your nose &amp; mouth while trying to blow your mouth (valsasavas manouver ) until you see you 1ry care physician or ENT.  Good luck.

can post nasal drip from chronic sinus infection 3 months..cause chest congestion/throat wheezing, especially at night when laying down or waking up? wheezing in throat is when exhaling and sounds crackling. congestion in chest is productive.

See doctor: Although chronic sinusitis may be associated with coughing and worsening in asthma, it does not per se cause a productive cough and expiratory wheezing.   I suspect that you are suffering from asthma. Recommend that you consult an allergist who will likely be able to find out the cause for your chronic sinusitis and chest congestion. You may have upper airway obstruction which needs be considered.

Breathing : Anything from a cold with a bit of congestion to airway obstruction, also heart disease may have respiratory problems, it depends if there are other signs and symptoms such as cough or shortness of breath.   If it is a recurring problem or you have other symptoms i urge you to consult your  doc.

Possible asthma: You may be developing asthma or some other lung pathology. Consult your doctor asap.

: Unusual. Could be mucus stuck in the smaller breathing tubes(bronchioles). It should clear up.  If it persists pl see a pulmonologist. Good luck

Auscultation exam: You have to be examined by a "real doctor" who will listen to you, both your history and do a good physical exam listening to your lungs. Then you will procede from there.
