Not much: Many teeth have cracks as you get older. Enamel is brittle and as you clench, grind, bite it causes some microfractures which eventually lead to cracks.  Cracks are not a big deal until they become deep, deep enough to reach the pulp of the tooth. Once that happens their is intense pain on biting; the tooth most often needs a root canal or extraction to solve this problem.  A crown is normally rec.

Cracked : Cracked tooth syndrome is a situation where there is a crack in the tooth, the tooth can hurt when you bite on it or when there is a thermal stimulus, but your dentist can't really pinpoint a problem.

Usually when a patient has pain on a tooth, we attribute it to a specific factor like a cavity, a broken filling, a dead nerve, etc. We address that specific cause. When we cannot determine the actual cause, we sometimes attribute it to a crack. The crack can be caused by grinding, wear and tear, or just that one time that you bite the wrong way at the wrong time.

For that one molar you asked about, it depends on how deep the cracks go and what direction they take. Cracks that stop above the gumline can be treated whereas cracks that go below the gumline often require extraction of the tooth. Difficult to advise you on what exactly your situation is.

How did your dentist propose to treat your tooth? You did not say. Just leaving it will allow the crack to get worse. If there are multiple cracks, then you may need a crown on it.

Regarding the rest of your teeth, if you are a bruxer, then an occlusal guard that snaps over your teeth will help, as well as an analysis of your bite. Smoothing down sharp points will take away those cusps that may be causing the problem.

Typically : Typically cracked tooth syndrome is due to bruxism (grinding teeth) or chewing excessively hard foods (such as ice).  Control of these etiologies will go a long way to reducing the potential for cracked teeth.

You : You may not be able to see the crack if there is one. Sometimes it is a hairline and will show up with the light reflected in just a certain way.

Does the tooth have a filling? Has it been checked out by a dentist? Maybe it has a cavity that you can't see.

Cracked tooth syndrome is usually used in the dental community when we check a tooth out very thoroughly, with a radiograph, and can't find anything wrong with it that we can see. When everything else turns up negative, we assume that there may be a crack, and that is how it is explained to the patient.

See below: It may provide pain relief but a cracked tooth needs to be looked after by a dentist, before it get worse and you have more serious issues to contend with. If you cannot afford a dentist, go the local school of dental medicine for subsidized care.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex. 
Get HPV vaccine.

Possibly: The test may have inflamed the vital nerve in the tooth. Doesn't matter, the tooth needs to be definitively treated... root canal, restoration, or extraction? Many cracks unfortunately result in a tooth that is not restorable.
