Controversial: Some will say any cracking is abnormal. I believe without discomfort it is being able to slide the upper part of your jaw over a bony structure at the base of the skull.  This can happen in most upon opening really wide.  Point is no pain. If there is pain, not good.

TMJ: This could be TMJ, or "temporomandibular joint pain syndrome", wherein the hinge joints of your lower jaw become arthritis. They'll click and crack, and will sometimes hurt.  An ENT doc may be able to offer you some assistance.  Or some dentists can help, too.

It's possible: Any trauma to the lower jaw runs the risk of fracture, depending upon the individual size and shape of the jaw and teeth. More often, trauma results in injury to the jaw joint, as joints are the weakest areas of the body most susceptible to traumatic injury. It would be prudent to start with a consultation with your dentist for an examination and radiographs.

Not really: Your are snapping the ligaments and tendons which support your jaw and prevent it from moving out of a comfortable range of motion. When they get lax, the joint doesn't function as well as it once did and can lead to more discomfort and reduction in jaw movement.

There's a small-: -meniscus in the TMJ just as in the knee. A tear of this can cause locking. Get into C an ENT specialist 4 eval.

TMJ joint: There is a "cushion" in your TMJ joint that separates the head of the lower jaw from you skull.    When this cushion or disc slips out of place between those two , you will here a pop or click. 

See your dentist to see if treatment is needed or not.  Is is painfull?  Do you get headaches?   Sore facial muscles?
