By prescription only: CPAP machines are used to treat obstructive sleep apnea. They are only available by prescription and are generally about the most effective treatment for osa. The trick is getting the right head-gear that is comfortable for the patient and provides adequate ventilation to properly treat them. So, i guess you could say that docs like them in that they are the ones prescribing them.

: I am not a sleep Dr but a Dr who uses a CPAP and knows a bit about OSA. A real sleep Dr will want to look at your sleep study to be able to better answer.   Different patterns require different devices. Eg Do you need bipap or O2. Discuss with your local team as they will know more about these devices in your area. Eg are both available, which have best mean time to failrue, fewest service calls.

There are three: Specialists that can help with sleep apnea and CPAP prescriptions.  ENT surgeons, pulmonologists and sleep specialists. I'm sure you have many doctors to choose from in your area.  Your personal physician can help with a referral.

using cpap 3 1/2 months.  ahi under 4 but still waking three times a night and tired in morning.  sleep doc says ahi is great.  why am i still  tired?

What causes apnea: Your sleep apnea may be a symptom of a metabolic problem. If your body is overly alkaline, your breathing would slow down to help you accumulate co2 and therefore be less alkaline. 
What causes alkalinity in the first place? One major cause is poor metabolism of carbohydrates also known as Insulin resistance. Reduce your consumption of sugars and carbohyrates. See a md who is knowledgable in metab.

Yes: Yes. Most CPAP devices are used at home.

They automatically: adjust your pressure, are smaller and more quit, plus they break down after that many years

hi doctors. are there any treatments for sleep apnea that use more portable masks or equipment? the old cpap masks seem to be very bulky?

: The newer CPAP devices are much smaller and the interface with your nose and mouth devices are much more comfortable and manageable. I would check with your doctor and ask for a referral to a medical supply company that can demonstrate these new editions to the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.

: About 50% of patients are intolerant of CPAP devices by 6 months.  Often different devices, such as dental splints, may be better choices.  Discuss different options with your doctor.

By taking a history: ...And reviewing the results of your sleep test.  There are specific findings on a sleep test, and a multiple sleep latency test, than can fairly easily distinguish among the options you refer to.

do i need a prescription from my doctor for the clearence of the cpap machine for security at the airport?

See below: Generally  prescription of CPAP  is not needed   for security clearance. But if my patient is very anxious  about travel we give them anyway. If  one is on oxygen  then may needed. Also one needs  to have universal converter for 120 to 240  volts if traveling  overseas.
