Accepted Answer

Best to wait.: The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly recommends not introducing 'table milk' until 12 months old.  The formula has more nutrition in it and is better tolerated by the intestines.  When you do make the switch, make sure to use whole milk until he's 2 years old -- he needs the extra calories for good brain growth.

Transitioning milk: Unless your baby was extremely premature, it is generally advised to transition to whole cow milk at around 1 year of age.  Gradual dilution of formula with cow milk has been employed by some parents.  Transient constipation is sometimes encountered during this change.  Monitor closely for symptoms of malabsorption or allergy, as indicated by gassiness, diarrhea, abdominal bloating or rash.

my baby 5 months old and found to be allergic to cow milk protein so drinks aptamil pepti. how can i choose right formula after he is 6 months? should i continue anti allergic formula? is it possible he outgrow the allergy and have regular formula?

: True cow milk ALLERGY is rare, and the infant would NOT be expected to outgrow. It can be DEADLY if unrecognized and reintroduction may lead to serious events. INTOLERANCE to cow-milk-based formulas is relatively common &amp; the infant could become cow-milk tolerant when older. It is best to work with your doc to find out the proper label.

my son is 5 months old and due to cow milk protein allergy drinks aptam pepti formula. he's a happy boy and gains weight normally but he has skin rash on just one side of his face that comes and goes. should l change his formula again?

: I prefer not, just apply vaseline on the rash when it appears.

i took a benadryl pill after an allergic reaction. i pumped two hours afterwards. is the pumped milk ok to give my five month old.

Will be fine: A;though we prefer people use the newer non-sedating anti-histamines if they need them for regular use, this is unlikely to bother baby at all. A small amount will pass in the milk &amp; we occasionally give it to babies. You are fine to use it.

due to fever my 5 month old has been refusing milk for the past 7 hrs, he kept wanting to sleep, what shuld i do?

Liquids: It is more important the child is drinking fluids than it is to consume milk in the first 24 hours.  If you try juices or water and the child is also refusing then i would have the child checked to see if he or she is having pain when swallowing.

Not sure Iunderstand: I think I am understanding that you don't have let-down at night.  I quick call to your local hospital OB department can put you into contact with a lactation specialist. These specialists won't mind getting the full story and making suggestions-for free!

"reflux": Inadequately functioning sphincter at lower gullet allows spitting ups in infants.  Attention should be paid on infant's weight gain and respiratory complication, e.g., wheezing.

my 5 month old baby only wants to drink water and not milk. we have started her on solids?

Accepted Answer

Needs formula: A baby at this age still needs either breast milk or formula for proper nutrition.The solid foods appropriate at this age do not contain all the vitamins and minerals she needs.Keep trying with the formula or breast milk if mom still has that.Try different types or brands if available and if still won’t take,can try spoon feeding the formula till she’s used to the taste. If not,see her doctor.

do you have any suggestions for helping a 10.5 month old transition from breast to bottle or sippy cup? i'm fearful he isn't getting enough milk.

Now my toddler...: An infant this age is getting more and more of their nutrition from solids and does not need as much milk/formula/nur s ing.  I would NOT wean to a bottle.  I would work right to sippy cup at this age. Only need 16 ounces a day if eating solids, so 4 ounces each meal and at bedtime will do! Or zippy at meals and nurse at bedtime - the options are plentiful.  Be patient while child learns the skill
