Individualized: Hi. No one on this site can tell you that information. You need to talk with your doctor or see a specialist who deals with diabetes. The amount of Novolog you take for meals depends meal-by-meal on what your sugar is coming into the meal, what &amp; how much you're going to eat, and your current sensitivity to insulin. You need to be doing frequent glucose monitoring to keep it safe &amp; effective.

I : I agree with you that it sounds like you are doing a very good job overall.  I am glad that you are so active and can do your own yard work, and feel well.

I am concerned that you are so anemic.  A hematocrit of 30.2 is very low.  It needs to be determined if that has been worked up, and if that is a stable hematocrit for you.

Your a1c sounds like it has been improving but htat is stll quite high.

I agree with you that portion control can be very helpful, and it sounds like you are quite active so that will also help you.

Big difference: Novolin has become synonimus with nph novolin insulin, though novolin is just a brand name, you also have novolin regular Insulin or novolin-r, so you have to be careful.  Novolog 70 /30  is a combination of 70% nph and 30% NovoLog (fast acting insulin) therefore the action of both insulins is very different.

Yes: It's infrequent but it is possible.  One way to know is to ask your doctor to switch you to an equivalent Insulin (humalog, apidra) and see if the reactions on NovoLog disappear.

Yes: If you use 70/30 NOVOLOG mix it is better to use NOVOLOG (instead of Apidra (insulin glulisine) ) for sliding scale coverage

Onset/duration: Novolin n (a brand of nph) is an intermediate acting insulin. It starts working after a few hrs, peaks in 6-8 hrs and lasts 12-16 hrs. Novolog is a rapid acting insulin. It starts to work in a few mins, peaks in an hr or two, lasts 4 hrs or so. Novolog is used @meals to prevent post-meal high bs and to "correct" bs.  Nph (or better yet a long acting like Lantus (insulin glargine) or levemir) keeps fasting bs lower.

Insulin analogs: Hi. Novolog (aspart) and Apidra (insulin glulisine) (glulisine) are both engineered insulins not found in nature. The human insulin gene was modified to give the expressed insulin analog favorable properties for meal coverage for diabetics. To me they are indistinguishable, but Apidra (insulin glulisine) works a little faster in obese patients. They are both very good meal insulins. Goo luck, and keep your diabetes tightly controlled!

The : The onset of action (starts working) of this rapid acting Insulin is about 15 minutes. So it starts working then. It lasts up to 5 hours but has very little effect after 4 hours. These are general times and do vary from 1 person to the next. If you inject in lumpy areas where you have repeatedly been injecting over the years the onset of action may be slower (take longer). We know now that you do not need long needles, 4 millimeters is long enough for injection. See the links below to learn more about this and other insulins. You can do a test on yourself to see how long the NovoLog takes to work by treating a high sugar without eating. Discuss this with your endocrinologist.

Novolog is rapid: Acting ; is used to cover sugars  that are elevated pre meals, when you mix the two you could get reaction- do not use the mixture you now have.

Congratulations: Great move. Well, NovoLog is quicker acting but also quicker getting out of your system. So make sure you eat as soon as you inject. As with any insulin, proper close titration is necessary to avoid hypoglycemia and wild fluctuations in your sugar levels. Overall, best short acting Insulin on the market at present, and the most physiologic.
