Vapors: Lose the head towel and just breath in vapor; alternatively, just take a shower and breath in the steam. The mentholatum is sooth, however can be irritating to nasal and lung passages in breathed in close proximity, Follow the label warnings,

Not likely: If you are experiencing cold symptoms and find relief from vapor rub and steam to be helpful then used in moderation, it should be safe. Use nasal saline rinses for congestion. It is unlikely to transmit the virus by doing so. 
Use social distancing, hand washing and wear a mask when around others. Have a flu vaccine.

if someone was to snort up the nasal cavity vicks vapor rub what would be the effects of this to the body. i think a friend is doing this and before i confront her i want more ionfo about how it can hurt your body or if it will.

Your : Your friend is lucky to have someone who is concerned about her health and well being. After some research into the subject, the two main harmful effects of doing this are respiratory (lung) and GI (stomach) issues. The respiratory concerns are impaired breathing which can lead to respiratory distress and even pneumonia, both of which can be deadly. The GI issues are mainly vomiting and abdominal pain, and esophagitis. 
I hope your friend stops this behavior afte rlearning of the harmful side effects; if not please encourage her to seek help.

Allergies: This sounds like you have some allergies.   Dust in homes can be tainted with lead dust, cockroach dander, pet dander, cigarrette smoke, among other toxins and allergic offenders.  You need a whopping dose of antihistamine now, say 10 mg cetirizine by mouth.  I am worried a little about your chest pain, especially if you have asthma.  Do you have an albuterol inhaler at home with spacer?

Irritation: The active ingredient in Vicks is a mentholated product which is a natural decongestant.  Placing it under you nose or in a vaporizer is fine, but it may cause irritation to your nasall membranes if placed inside.

But why?: Interesting question.  According to poison control, no. But the ingredients are camphor and menthol both of which have been used in cooking for centuries.  It appears that doses of 50 mg camphor are safe ( way more than would be fond in cooking) 2000 mg will likely produce serious symptoms and 4000 mg is possibly fatal. I don't really see any benefit to eating vicks.

I don't advise it: This product is marketed with the idea that stinky medicine smell is therapeutic. It replicates the aroma  therapy indian tribes uses in sweat lodges with pine pitch. I don't recommend it for kids under 2 as the smell often aggravates congestion.

i used vicks baby vapor rub on my 2 month old chest, then realized the box said 3 months! will he be okay? i used a very little.

Yes: He will be ok. When i recommend, I usually say to put a small amount on the clothes or onesie, not on the skin itself.
