Diagnosis: You're asking for a differential diagnosis of a lesion that cannot be seen. No one is going to tell you "don't worry" unless the can examine you and treat you and take the responsibility for your well being. If you are truly worried, make an appointment with a local oral surgeon who will examine you and possibly biopsy the lesion.

Realistic?: Much higher than one who has never smoked. We used to say that one who starts between age 12 and 17, and smokes for 5 years, then never again, has the same risk as one who starts at 25 and smokes daily for 30 years. Risks are multifactorial: include genetics and co-factors. Like crime, if you can't do the time, don't  do the crime. If you can't risk  the disease, don't do the deed. Best to quit!

Oral Ca: Yes it possible for a person to still contract an oral cancer.  There are many variables that can contributing factors.  Regular dental checkups with screenings would hopefully catch any condition early enough to treat with a good prognosis.

White Patches: White patches in the mouth can be from a variety of causes including bite trauma, irritations from a poorly fitting dental appliance, overgrowth of a fungus called candida albicans, leukoplakia, which is common in tobacco users, or in rare cases, a form of oral cancer.  Let a dentist, who is a specialist in diseases of the mouth examine you to determine the nature of your white patches.

Odds in your favor: Based upon your age &amp; description, from a statistical standpoint you have a very low chance of developing oral cancer. Tobacco in any form along with alcohol, especially when used together greatly increases the risks. The risks go up with age. Congratulations on stopping and spread the word. Everyone should still get a thorough head and neck cancer screening every 6 months as part of a dental exam

Depends: I am unaware of any published studies that can quantify how long you have to chew tobacco before being diagnosed.

Oral cancer from chewing tobacco is obviously a concern. The number of times you chewed tobacco and your risk of getting oral cancer may also be dependent upon the type of tobacco you chew, the location (if you keep it in the same location), as well as how long you chewed it each time.
