m, 26, filipino. how do i deal with covid cough with phlegm? i get coughing fits which almost always has rattling sound like my chest is full of phlegm and it's hard to expel, like i'm coughing my lungs out and i only expel small green phlegm?

: It sounds like you have chronic bronchitis. If you are a smoker, by far the most important way to deal with this is to stop smoking. Either way, this needs in-person medical evaluation and perhaps treatment. See a doctor. Good luck.

completed zpac was feeling better.  now i am feeling achy again and my phlegm is back to being hard to cough up and grey green. please help!

Cough: Call your doctor... You may need to be seen or checked for pneumonia or sinusitis. Sometimes more antibiotics are needed.

Possible: A productive cough with fever is suggestive of pneumonia, either viral or bacterial. Depending on how long your symptoms have been occurring, it would be reasonable to see your doctor who may choose to get a chest x-ray.

Mgt: I would suggest drinking fluids, rest and if you have a fever for more than one day, seeing your PCP. You may have bronchitis, Most bronchitic infections are viral but some should be treated with a course of antibiotics. If you have lung disease, smoke, or are experiencing shortness of breath, please see your ED right away.

Chronic bronchitis: Smokers are more likely to cough at night and first thing in the morning because the smoke damages the lungs ability to clean itself so mucus sits during periods of inactivity,  becomes discolored, and then is coughed out.  If the  green mucus is recent consider viral illness or pneumonia.

Green: phlegm may mean you have a tracheobronchitis  which is often due to PNEUMOCOCCUS a BACTERIA which may appear green in mucous!

You may need a short course of antibiotics at this point!

Call your PCP  (Primary Care Provider) as soon as practicable!
