Bronchitis: The salty taste to sputum strongly suggest bronchitis as well as other sx. Probably viral. Viral bronchitis destroys lining to bronchus which has to regrow. Not uncommon to have micro leakage of serum which is salty.

Post nasal drip: Post nasal drip is the likely cause of your cough. Over the counter Flonase 1 spray in each nostril twice daily and daily sinus rinses usually help. Hope this helps!

Allergies are my guess for the excessive CLEAR (means not-infected) mucous i your upper airways!

Try an OTC ANTI-HISTAMINE  (eg Claritin)

: It may be that the mucus is not coming from your lungs, but from post nasal drip from your sinuses. Try warm saline nasal washes to clear out the debris, mucus and any bacteria from your nasopharynx and sinuses. You can also try a decongestant to help drain those areas.

Postnasal drip: Most like causes of chronic cough in adults are chronic bronchitis (smokers with yellow am sputum), gastric reflux, cough variant asthma, allergy, and post nasal drip.  Most cause dry cough but sometimes can expectorate clear saliva or mucous which is of infrequent concern especially if normal chest x-ray and no breathing problems.  Average healthy nose makes 1-1.5 pints of mucous daily!

Post-nasal drainage can be caused by allergies or infections. If ongoing long-term symptoms, get tested for allergies

Possibilities...: Possible etiologies of this cough includes gerd, post-nasal drip. Bronchospasm from any cause can also contribute. If you are smoking, smoking cessation to decrease airway inflammation is needed. See your doctor so this cough can be diagnosed and the proper treatment rendered.

Need answers: Well, how much do you cough-up?  When (more in the morning?)? What kind of cigarettes do you smoke? For how long have you smoked? Coughed? Is that light brown stuff ever red? Is the brown stuff in little spots or all smeared-up? Are you getting the impression I'm worried about your smoking? Besides that, it may just be irritation from air pollution, allergies, a mild cold or, oh yes, smoking.
