Maybe: Coughing blood is a classic sign of lung cancer, but may also be seen with acute infections, chronic bronchitis, or even dental disease. This should always be worked up to rule out lung cancer (or head and neck cancer) and not assumed to be secondary to something beingn. The prognosis for lung cancer is dramatically improved with early diagnosos, often made difficult by the lack of early symptoms.

Can be: But is also seen with many other problems related to lungs and heart, sometimes as "simple" as a bronchitis. It should be evaluated, though. It can be something serious, especially if the patient is a smoker. Do you smoke?  Hope not....

Oncologist: Your father should be treated by a cancer specialist, or what is called an Oncologist, immediately! His best chances for effective treatment which may improve his quality of life will be if he sees an Oncologist. He should also eat a lot of fruit &amp; veggies. Amygdalin (Laetrile) has not been shown by research to treat or prevent cancer &amp; may be associated with serious adverse effects. Best of luck!

i called the dr this last week due to coughing up blood. he performed a chest x-ray and found a nodule on my left lung base. he ordered a cat scan. how worried should i be that this is cancer? both of my grandfathers passed from lung cancer?

Preterminal: Unfortunately the patient appears to be preterminal with life expectancy predicted to be in days or weeks. Hospice care will ensure that pain and suffering will be avoided and will not prolong death. I assume that the patient and family understands and agrees with this plan of care.

If you are a smoker, heavy smoker, positive family history, weight loss  and recurrent spells,then the risk of CANCER rises.

No: These findings not indicative of lung cancer.  Cough with occasional sign of blood tinged sputum frequently due  to irritation of pharynx where sputum may arise.  If symptoms don't improve but progress then chest X ray needed.

: Did you have a chest X-Ray? Lung cancer in your case is very unlikely &amp; heart pathology is also unlikely. . Before attributing your symptoms to anxiety,I recommend having a chest X-Ray &amp; an X-Ray of your upper spine if your physician agrees with this advice.
