Possibilities...: There are many possible causes of a severe cough including bronchospasm from any cause, acute bronchitis, post-nasal drip, gerd or a combination of these diagnoses. All of these have different treatments so you need to see your doctor for diagnosis and treatment. If you smoke, you need to quit to decrease airway inflammation.

Post nasal drip?: Post nasal drip can sometimes cause cough in the morning and at night. If he is unwell, losing weight, bringing up blood when he coughs, has fevers you should see a doctor immediately. Otherwise I would speak to your doctor about possible treatments and get him checked out.

Vasovagal: People with high vagal tone may develop vasovagal episodes ( sudden drop on blood pressure and fainting when they cough, sneezing or during strong emotional event, blood drawing etc...), check with your doctor for further evaluation.

Coughing increases: the intrathoracic pressure and impedes the return of blood to the heart. This results in a decrease in the blood output to the head for a few beats and therefore dizziness.

Depends: Do you have fever? Do you cough up discolored phlegm? Has this been going on &gt; 1 week?  Are you short of breath? Do you have 1 swollen leg?  Recent surgery or fracture? Diabetes? Prolonged travel? If the answer to any of these is "yes", you should see your doctor.

Severity determines: Occasional incontinence of stool with fecal leakage is common, but loss of bowel control particularly without warning may signal a significant infection, inflammatory problem, maldigestive concern, or neurologic disorder.  Sometimes, particularly in youths, the condition is behavioral.  Often, anal manometry followed by biofeedback can be curative without the need of surgery or medication.

hi, our 17 month old boy has a wet cough for over 2 weeks now. he coughs mostly at night and early morning when he wakes up. we have been giving him cortisone for 4 days now but it still persists. should we wait longer and hope that it will pass?

Most likely URI: Persistent cough in a 17 month old for 2 weeks can be as simple as the common cold.  It can also be caused by viral induced bronchospasm, particularly if the cough is dry and worse at night.  An inhaled or oral steroid may help.  Also an inhaled bronchodilator may help as well.  If there are any persisitent fevers, weight loss, or loss of appetite, see you pediatrician.
