just had a hacking cough after choking on water. i had tonsillectomy 4 days ago. will this increase bleeding risk?

BreathingAsAnOption: Those tonsils,and what's left of them,have lots of little blood vessels in them, so after surgery(for at least a week, maybe two)they are prone to bleed if bothered (like by rough foods,prolonged heavy coughing,sneezing,vomiting,etc).But in your case,you had one episode and didn't bleed so the risk going forward is probably the same.Of course,you could just hold your breath for the next week or so

i have had a cough now for about 2 weeks now and i find my self coughing so hard water comes to my eyes and my bladder leaks.. i cough as if i'm choking.. especially if it's too hot my cough uncontrollably it takes being cooler to control the cough theres

That : That sounds awful!  you really should see your doctor so they can listen to your lungs.  They will try to figure out if the symptoms are due to a lung infection (like pneumonia) or coming from an upper-respiratory issue (like a sinus infection or other virus).  Regardless, there are some great cough suppressants they can prescribe to at least get your symptoms under control.  I hope you get better soon!

drank water last night and the last gulp felt like it went down wrong pipe and i started choking/coughing. could i have woke up with water in lungs?

No: You aspirated some water in the lungs, happens all the time. As long as you feel ok you'll be fine.

my daughter (3) was swimming in our pool fully supervised. she came up from swimming under water and came up coughing and choking on water. im sure she if swallowed or inhaled. it looked as though she coughed out water. should i worry dry drowning?

: She may have swallowed or aspirated some water. If she develops a cough,fever, stridor, or any distress, please follow up with a physician. Otherwise, usually there is no complication based on your description. Observe her closely while in or around water.

i was drinking dulcosoft (macrogol 4000) mixed with water to soften my stool when it went down the wrong pipe and i started choking and coughing. can something bad happen from getting a swallow of polyethylene glycol down the wrong pipe?

: Most of the time, when you cough, you clear most of what went “down the wrong pipe”. If you experience shortness of breath, fever or continued cough, then see your doctor for evaluation. If you are feeling fine, then you likely cleared it. Best of luck to you!

Let them cough: When someone chokes on liquids it usually means they have gotten the liquid into their windpipe and the irritation causes them to cough. It is a reflex to try and get the material out of the trachea and into the esophagus where it should be. Patting on the back or repositioning the head are of no help. Simply let them cough and keep them upright as this will permit the most effective cough.

is it possible for an adult to "dry drown" from choking on a cup of water?

Theoretically: Anything which triggers a laryngospasm can cause "dry drowning".  I believe there would have to be an underlying illness for that to occur however, most people have a reflex in the larynx to prevent the water from going into the lungs, but if this spasms (usually from prolonged or persistent exposure to noxious gasses or fluids) it could lead to death.

No: Choking on water will not cause wet drowning. But possible to have dry drowning if you have difficultly swallowing and you air way closed on you because of a cup of water.

Accepted Answer

Unlikely: A choking episode attempts to avoid material from going into your lungs. Forceful coughing and a flap called the epiglottis protect your lungs. If after recovering from the choking episode, you have any difficulty breathing, shortness of breath or wheezing you should be evaluated in the ER.

Accepted Answer

Not good!: Do you think it would feel good?  My intuitions are that it would feel terrible, or until your brain locked down.  Have never spoken to someone who survived.
