i took cough syrup with codine for cough instead of getting sleepy it made me active and focused, cleaned and did meaningful tasks i don't like, why?

Paradoxical reaction: May have had the opposite reaction than what is usually seen.  If steroids or sudafed were included with the Codeine then these meds could cause these symptoms.

is a cough syrup with codine better then promethazine dm for coughs?

It depends: Upon what is cough due to. Is it just allergy? Asthma? From smoking? Infection causing Bronchitis? Pneumonia?   And also upon what did you try OTC.  Warm Ginger tea is very good for soothing throat.

dr gave me cough syrup with  codine  an hour ago can i still take a tylenol (acetaminophen) 3 with codine?

Don't advise it: Unless your physician who gave you the cough syrup with codeine, knew you were also taking tylenol (acetaminophen) #3, you should not take both.  Each tablet of tylenol (acetaminophen) #3 contains 300 mg of tylenol (acetaminophen) and 30 mg of codeine.  While these are not high doses, when taken in combination with cough syrup that may contain tylenol (acetaminophen) and certainly codeine, you may be taking too much.  Check with your physician first.

i have had a fever from 100 to 104 for the past 4 days, after two trips to urgent care i did not have influenza a or b, it is a viral infection and respiratory infection.  i was given cough syrup with codine and have been alternating motrin and tylenol.

Sounds correct: If this is a viral illness you should begin to improve within a day or two and have less fever and fatigue.  You do not need antibiotics and the urgent care people seem to have done well.

No: For severe cough, we may prescribe Robitussin (guaifenesin) w/ codeine. It will help w/ cough suppression, illness pain, and insomnia. For people who do not tolerate codeine, vicotussin can be used; but that has hydro-codone, which you say you're sensitive to. That pretty much rules out the narcotics for cough suppression. You could use tessalon for great cough control, but without the sedation nor pain control.

Dextromethorphan: Dextromethorphan is present in many otc cough preparations, such as robitussin, (guaifenesin) delsym a& bentylin dm to name a few.  If your cough persists longer than 3 weeks, see your physician.

is it possible for you to take melatonin with codine cough syrup?

Accepted Answer

Yes: If you have taken melatonin in the past with good results, it is ok to take it along with a prescription cough syrup. Just be aware that there can be additive effects of taking both together, ie you may be more sedated than usual, or even feel groggy when you wake up in the morning. Use a low dose of melatonin, eg .5-1 mg and increase by .5mg nightly if needed.

Not equivalent: but dextromethorphan in adequate dosage has cough suppressant activity equivalent to codeine.

Motrin: Yes you can mix Ibuprofen with cough medicine containing codiene.

i have been diagnosed with walking pneumonia, i've been prescribe a strong antibiotic for 10 days. my chest is feeling bruised pain on the right side & back. is this one of the situation where the codine cough medicine would help?

Accepted Answer

: Codeine is no longer used/ recommended for pain, rarely used for severe cough, talk to your doc about your symptoms, abstain from self treating.
