All supportive care: If you do have HFM disease, it's all supportive care. Pain meds (Tylenol/Motrin),plenty of fluids &amp; what you are already doing. Sometimes Maalox can help with the pain if you hold it on the back of your throat. Popsicles and other cold liquids can help. If bad enough, there are prescriptions that your MD can phone in as well.

is it true that if you take dayquil for symptom management if you have a cold (pn drip/sore throat/cough) that the cold may take longer to go away?

Not necessarily : I would treat symptoms if improves the patient feeling better.Sometimes if you suppress a cough you may not clear secretions as much but if does significantly make you feel better and causes no other harm such as increasing blood pressure then I would treat it.It will likely not increase the duration of the illness that significantly.

Hopefully: She really may have caused a lot of chemical irritation. How much? that is the question that says she should be examined by her physician to see if any significant damage was done to the delicate tissues in the oral cavity &amp; lungs.

Dr. can check throat: Throat symptoms can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or other virus (antibiotics usually not used), allergies or irritants, sinusitis, stomach reflux when asleep, etc... Usually, one sees the doctor if the throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep and review details to see if laryngitis, bronchitis, etc., are present).

You might have a: Viral infection. If you have a significantly sore throat w swollen tonsils / lymph nodes – see your medical provider & get a strep throat test & culture. Saltwater gargles are very helpful. Mix a teaspoon of salt in 8 oz of warm water – gargle with this several times a day. You can gargle with aloe vera juice a couple of times per day. A mixture of chamomile tea with honey & a small amt of lemon.
