Not significant: Coagulate negative staph in normal host is without any significance. If person has prosthetic implant in body, pacemaker , hd catheter, or any other device than you need to correlate symptoms with that particular patient and come to conclusion . In that scenario you need to see infectious disease physician.

Pain mostly: There are better options than stripping in some cases. Laser or rf ablation is less painful and can be cosmetically better. Bruising and bleeding are common but not generally life threatening. Also common is a need to treat left over varicose veins after the first stripping. Laser and rf have the same issue. Deep blood clots are unusual but possible.

Non specific - yes: D- dimer is degraded fibrin product, typically elevated in any condition that leads blood clot formation. In DIC,  there is inappropriate cascade of coagulation in response to serious inflammation that leads to consumption of platelets to form clots in body organs. So d dimer elevation is used as one of the marker to help in making diagnosis of DIC. It is not specific for DIC.

Not a standard: Treatment for varicose veins.  There's no reason for this to have any permanent effect, although, in the short term, massage may reduce swelling in the legs.

Could be either: Technically, phlebothrombosis means a blood clot in a vein without inflammation.  It is a term that we don't see being used very often these days.  Thrombophlebitis means inflammation of a vein with a clot.  Generally, when one gets a dvt, a clot forms that causes the vein to become inflamed and painful. If a DVT occurs that isn't painful, it is more likely to be a phlebothrombosis.  Clear as mud?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Depending on the severity of the blood clot, thrombolytic agents can be given either systemically (through an iv) or directed at the clot itself via a catheter.

Some data support better outcomes when they are directly aimed to bust open a clot where it exists, but this is dependent on the expertise of the center you are being treated at. In general, thrombolysis is reserved for severe cases.

DVT in pregancy: If i understand your q correctly. Use Lovenox for DVT treatment during pregnancy. Coumadin (warfarin) is contraindicated as it has terotogenic effect. See your local hematologist for special guidance for management of DVT during pregnancy and delivery.
